Magical Place
Sep 2018 • Friends
Porciano Castle is a magical place to stay in Tuscany where you can experience the genuine ambiance and history of the region. The cottages at the foot of the castle are charming, with all the amenities to make your stay comfortable. Just gazing out the window at the Tuscan hillside, with a homemade cappuccino in hand, is worth the entire visit!

Both the owner and manager of Porciano are so welcoming and acquainted us with all the wonderful places to visit in Stia, the charming town one mile down the hill, and also trips to take in the general area.

In Stia and other towns we visited, the food was homemade, very delicious and reasonable. We spent a week at Porciano, taking day trips or enjoying local activities and honestly would have enjoyed more time in this beautiful area.

Intimate Yet Grand

The ambiance of this place is pure 'life-in-the-country' Renaissance and a wonderful place to stay for a few days to simply relax and enjoy the countryside. The castle has been lovingly cared for and is shows! Providing a beautiful and authentic experience of castle life yet with all the modern conveniences. And the views are stunning! Castello di Porciano is a place we will return to!!!

Home away from home

We love this place, we have stayed there on three different vacations and will go back again. The owner and her Manager are so gracious, they absolutely make you feel special and at home during your visit. The town of Stia is small however an easy drive to many areas of art and great food. Located about a one hour drive east of Florence in a beautiful valley.

Amazing place to stay.

A friend of mine had stayed there and became friends with the owner Martha. She now goes back frequently and stays a month! I had to see for myself and our 1 day visit became a week long experience of a life time. There is a variety of lodging from renting the castle itself or to staying in a castle tower or a "cottage" in the castle hamlet. All equip with kitchens and everything Americans want. This is a tiny village of maybe 18 homes and a church whose bells ring every day. The lodging is very affordable as are the restaurants in Stia, the historic town below. There is plenty to do and see in the valley of Casentino, from a wool museum sum, ceramics factory, wine tasting, the castle at Poppi and hiking in the nearby national forest. The best part of the visit is just experiencing life at a castle with welcoming hosts, song birds, flowers and a sense of history everywhere.

A Private Tour
Jun 2015 • Couples
We wandered up to this castle without expectations and were very pleasantly surprised to meet there the current owner. There is a fascinating story about how a WWII American intelligence officer met a Florentine lady whose family owned the castle and together restored it as a second home and museum. Their daughter Martha now owns and manages the castle and neighboring cottages. Martha arranged for her property manager Federica to show us through the castle, which includes a large apartment available for rent, in addition to a very interesting museum. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the incredibly beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Highly recommended.

Lucky visit
Jun 2015 • Couples
Taking a ride into the country after three days in sweltering cities, we drove up to this tower perched on the top of a hill near Stia. Stia was dead, it was a Monday and we didn't have much hope that the castle would be open - and it wasn't.
We walked to the gate and found the limited opening times and took a few photographs of the castle itself and surrounding views.
Just walking away, a lady came out of a house and introduced herself as the owner and offered to open it up for us. We read the brochure while she finished something off - an interesting family story of an italian nurse who met and married an american soldier at the end of WWII. They stayed in Italy and, among other things, restored the family castle.
The museum is limited with agricultural items on floor 1, details of restoration and pottery found in the restoration on floor 2 and floor 3 a place to enjoy the cool and great views.
No entrance charge but a request for donations as it is not supported by any government or other grant.

No better place in the Casentino Valley

Just go! Call the owner, Contessa Martha, and make an appointment. You will not regret it. Either Martha or one of her staff will give you a tour and most likely you can get up to the top and have the most amazing views ever into the Casentino Valley!
