We stopped here on a Viking river cruise. Spent more time than intended because we were forced to miss Basel due to high water (but that's a different review). This little town is pleasant and easily walkable. A local map was available with 3 self-guided walking trails and I did all of them. The Church of St Stephan is the most obvious attraction. It is a lovely church, partially reconstructed, on a promontory overlooking the river. The high altar is fascinating and very detailed. There are interesting and photogenic stops all around town. Definitely worth a few hours of exploration.

I don't know how to add a new attraction, so I am adding this in the wrong place.
We stopped in Breisach on a Viking Cruise and the Cathedral caught our eye as it stood on a hill and overlooked the town. We walked up to the Cathedral through winding cobblestone streets and found beautiful views of the surrounding town, countryside and distant Black Forest. Unfortunately the Cathedral was not open, but on-line descriptions make it sound like it would be worthwhile to go inside. It has a carved altar created in the 1520s and other significant decorative paintings and silver-work.
Outside in the plaza is a very unique work of art - a large bull bursting through the paving bricks and bearing a headless woman. Complete the stroll with a gelato and you have been able to get a bit of exercise, enjoy the weather and seen some of the distinctive features of this beautiful little town.

Visited as stop on Viking Rhine Cruise. Easy town to stroll through, even up the hill to St. Stephan's church. Church was open for viewing, no photos allowed, but most of the town's shops were closed on Sunday. Very pretty town

We were on a stop on an Avalon River cruise and decided to skip the cruise excursion and just stay in town. We set our goal as a walk to the Stephanmunster, the church at the top of the hill. It was a beautiful day and the town is lovely to just stroll around. The church is worth a walk up the hill as you have great views of the surrounding area from up there. The church was open and we were able to walk inside and look around. There is not a lot to do here but it was a nice, relaxing morning for us.

We enjoyed our short stay in the village of Breisach with its unique European style streets & the historic church looking over the Rhine. This was our final stop with our Uniworld Rhine River cruise which started in Amsterdam however did not reach the end destination of Basel, due to the water level on the river being too high! We were not disappointed as the secluded town allowed us to enjoy a lovely walk to see the sites.

This small village is certainly worth a nice stroll. There are a number of historically significant buildings to see. The church is a main point. It is worth some time. The age is impressive and the faded paintings on the inside walls is quite a story. Be sure to walk to the hill opposite the church. There you get a great elevated view back to the church and a lovely small vineyard to see. There are some really nice small cafes near the main square.

As with many here, Breisach was our first port on our amazing Viking cruise up the Rhine. This was our first taste of a small town on the Rhine. It was just lovely strolling through the town and taking in the sights. Lots of great photo-taking spots!

This tour takes about two hours and is a very relaxing way to pass an afternoon. The fare was 12 Euros each for the trip. It winds along the Rhine with Germany on one side of the ship and France on the other - interesting experience. We saw lots of swimmers in the river, as the day was quite hot.

Our Viking boat docked at this quaint little town for disembarkation for an excursion, but we decided not to purchase the excursion, so took a walking tour of this little town. We visited shops along the main street. Made a few purchases using my best college German. Don't ever believe that everyone in Europe speaks English. The shop keepers that we chatted with knew about as much English as I remembered my German, but since I had practiced a bit before leaving US, I was able to make myself understood. We departed with lots of laughter and great "auf Wiedersehen" all around. Love pedestrian main street. Buildings on tree lined side streets are labeled with names of original home owner and date constructed.

Hallo,

Hi Elizabeth,
We are also going to be on the Viking cruise. DId you go into Colmar? Would you visit Breisach instead of Colmar or did you do both? Is it possible to get to Colmar without a tour from the cruise?
Thanks so much.

We did not visit Colmar. Looking at the date of your question, I believe that you have already taken your trip, so I am delinquent in answering your questions. We walked around the lovely town of Breisach, but reflecting back, I wish I had visited Colmar.

We
are going to be in Breisach in June, on a Viking river cruise. The morning is taken up with a tour of the Black Forest area. We are trying to decide whether to book an optional afternoon tour to Colmar. Is there enough to do/see in Breisach to fill an afternoon and evening? Were you able to book the canal tour you took after you arrived?
