About
A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants. Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989. The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question. Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans. Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other. Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

We visited the Gardens in low season (early May on a Monday). The entrance is just off the N2 and as most attractions here is well signed. The gardens open at 9am and we got there not long after that. There was plenty of parking space and at that time in the morning the first few on the right stayed in the shade until we got out a couple of hours later.
Staff at the entrance were very friendly and showed us how to buy a ticket from the machine (you can choose English). Entrance fee was quite expensive at €15 per adult.

You go round the site on a one way system which makes for a nice walk, mainly in the shade. At the end you can choose to either head towards the exit or the restaurant which is beautifully located at the top of a mini waterfall.

On one of the viewpoints you can see a private villa which was the site used in the Death in Paradise episode where the first inspector was killed. Sadly, you can’t visit that particular site.

We had a drink at the snack bar at the end which had beautiful views and plenty of shade.

Overall, a lovely place to spend the morning. Whilst there is no English information on any of the plants, it is so beautiful that you can still enjoy it.

Beautiful place but staff not friendly and nothing in English !
Shuttle was late by 25 minutes so only had 40 minutes to race round as it closes at 4pm.
Beautiful but nothing in English so hard to understand and take advantage of the place.

Do pay for the overpriced ‘feed’- parrots we’re the highlight (and flamingos!) don’t forget the goats st the end of the tour- the 3rd pot of food is for them which wasn’t explained so the fish had it instead …!!!

This rates five stars for this part of the world.

Anyone interested in tropical flora will like and appreciate this place.

It is well curated, though virtually entirely in French. (Maps are also available in English.)

It is well laid out, so that even when the parking lots are full and overflowing, the paths do not seem crowded.

Those interested in avifauna will not be disappointed either.

Quite apart from the Coconut Lorikeets and the Red & Green Macaw in their respective enclosures, all the other birds are either, like the Flamingos and Blue-and-yellow Macaws, free to fly away anytime they want, or else wild. I counted 14 different species inside an hour, without focussing exclusively on birds.

The restaurant, though busy when we were there, was quite good, offering lots of local dishes. Our waiter was friendly and helpful and efficient. Nice location, with lots of tables offering views on to the gardens. Perhaps not as superb as some reviews make it, but certainly worth eating at and fairly priced.

Watch out for the Ti-punch, though: “Punch” is the operative descriptor, especially on an empty stomach.........

Worth the effort and the entry charge? Yes, certainly.

Nicely laid out, well labelled plants and a lot of large specimens of what we would have as house plants in UK. Nice pond and love flamingos. Good place to come to. It is a bit of a way depending where you are coming form but worth it.

We were there in the morning, the place was not crowded, and we had a very relaxing and interesting promenade of roughly three hours. There is a lot to see and to learn: trees typical of the caribbean islands such as the voyager, flowers such as the bougainvillea, birds such as the blackbird, ara or lori. There is a little stream from top to bottom of the seven-hectar-place which contributes to a refreshing atmosphere.

Visiting from Montreal and decided to visit the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies. We throughly loved our visit here. Well organized path to follow with beautiful foliage. We also made reservations at the restaurant as soon as we arrived, this was a good move. We were able to have a table overlooking the garden, and had our best meal of the trip in Guadeloupe.

We spent a few hours touring this wonderful spot. An amazing array of flowers, trees and plants from around 5he globe. Thank goodness there were shelters along the way as showers came up quickly. There is also a restaurant and a snack bar.

We’ve gone to le Jardin Botanique 2 times. The exotic flowers and beautiful water features are delightful. They also have parrots and flamingoes. The restaurant had a good selection of creole food. For fans of Death In Paradise, a British TV show, this is where the first inspector was killed!

A nice visit for a cloudy day, this 2 hour journey through nature’s most beautiful flowers, trees and plants in what used to be actor Coluche’s estate. The birds are impressive and fun too.
