I took a day trip in Snaellfesness Peninsula early this March. Our tour guide cum driver Maria Steinunn was so professional, picked me up early in the morning & sent me back right at my hostels door step safe & sound. She is so knowledgeable in her expertise & drives carefully in a snowy weather condition. She brought us to the point of interests in The Peninsula to explore & enjoy the places. The time given in each stop was just right & given us lots of photo opportunity in every stop. I will definitely recommend this day trip to all my friends & colleagues looking for an adventure like me. And it is even safe to a solo travellers like me.

Snaefellsnes is a frozen wasteland. It has its beauty but that is countered by the feeling of being in a blast freezer, at least during winter. The day tour is a long long day. 12 hours. Plenty of restroom breaks but not much else. Drive half hour, walk around on your own for half hour and repeat. Spotted history and tales by the tour driver. Look out the window between the airport to Reykjavik. Basically the same scenery. No introductions on bus, so no camaraderie. I wish someone had left a review like this. I would not have taken this tour. Highly recommended NOT to take tours here.

Prior to our trip, I emailed the company & signed up for this tour since we would be arriving by cruise ship. This is what we signed up for. “We have a tour from Grundarfjörður. It start´s at 11:00 at Kaffi Emil (tourist information, 2 min walk from the harbor) We will stop at the best places. First stop is at Búlandshöfði where you have a beautiful view over the Breiðarfjörður ocean. Our second stop is Djúpalónsandur beach, there we will take a short walk to the viewing platform to see over the beautiful black stone beach, remains of a crater to name a few. From there we go to Malarrif (wc-stop) Next in line is Arnarstapi where the surf has sculpted strange cliff formations and we see the birdlife. Our last stop is at Búðir, where we see white beach and beautiful old and small church. We will be back in Grundarfjörður between 17:00 and 18:00. The guide will have information about when you should be back to the harbor.” When I arrived in the morning, I was told that this tour wasn’t being offered. And for the same price ($100), I could go on a 3-hour tour beginning at 1:00. Attached is a photo of the new itinerary. And they would only run this tour if more people showed up. The driver & woman in charge seemed much more interested in sitting & drinking coffee than helping us so we chose to do the puffin boat tour with Laki which was wonderful.

We were really looking forward to an excursion by this company. They offered a glacier tour but they were sold out so they offered, what we thought was a private tour for a group of six of us to see the sights in Grundarfjörður. When I arranged the tour they said that they could not take us unless we had a group of six. So I arranged with a group of my friends for the six of us to go on this tour. When we arrived Grundarfjörður, we were asked to meet them at the tourist information center. I thought that was a little odd because all of our other private tours on our cruise around Iceland, picked us up at the ship. When we got to the tourist information center, there were a slew of people and they were all signing up for what appeared to be bus tours. When I got to the desk I inquired about our private driver and where to meet him. They said, you did not sign up for a private tour, you signed up for a bus tour. The only thing we can offer you is a bus tour that seated 80 people. We don’t do private tours. I had all my documentation and showed them what we had arranged and that we are indeed booked a private tour. I asked who I was communicating with via email and they said it was the owner, who was not available. We had to decide whether or not we were going to go on the bus tour or just cancel it altogether. Two people backed out and the rest of us did the bus tour. They said that we would see the same things that was on our itinerary and that when we book this, this was the tour that was offered by the bus. We did not really want to be with a bunch of people which is why we booked the private tour to begin with. The tour ended up being OK but as we were winding down, one of the main features that we want to see was to go to this beautiful waterfall. It appeared that we were heading back to the ship and we asked the guide when are we going to go see the waterfall? She said will pass by it but we can’t stop because the bus won’t fit in the parking lot. She said that’s not offered on the tour. I said it’s on our itinerary and showed it to her. She ended up getting another guide involved who was not helpful at all. She said oh I remember you girls from when you were signing up for the bus. She said you should’ve come and talk to me about the private tour and we could’ve arranged that. I said if you were standing there and heard our conversation, why didn’t you come over and talk to us about it? She said that’s not my place you should’ve come and talk to me about it??? The main reason we signed up for the tour was to see the waterfall. We would like to see the waterfall and we want to know what you’re gonna do to help us. She said I need to call the owner and I will get back to you on our next stop. We were on a smaller bus so five minutes later we ended up at the waterfall and the other bus went back to the ship. So they at least made the stop that was on our itinerary. I never write reviews but I felt like I needed to write this one. If you try to book with these people and think you are getting a private tour, beware. In addition, there was another couple on our bus who also thought they were getting a private tour and they were very unpleased as well.

We had a lovely time. The view from the top was absolutely stunning. We have been to a few glaciers before in Europe and Usa but view from this one was very different. Thor was so engaging, he absolutely loved the glacier and so proud of the area.
