Amaras is idyllic and located not far from the border between Artsakh and Azerbaijan proper. The landscape here is different from that in other parts of Artsakh - low-lying hills with more golden brown colors than deep green (at least in summer) - much like Southern California.

The monastery itself is enclosed by a wall and has an underground mausoleum that you can enter from inside the church sanctuary. From the underground chamber, you can follow another tunnel out an into an area that is currently under excavation/restoration and is covered by a plastic roof.

A walk around the perimeter of the monastery along the top of the wall was the highlight for me - great views and photo ops! Just watch out for the holes in the wall!

The Amaras Monastery is a very new monastery compared to some of the others we have been to in Nagorny Karabakh. Peaceful, tranquil and nice to look at and that’s where it ends, but the scenery surrounding the monastery is a delight so for that it is worth trekking here.
