Fot those who love geology and nature this is a "must do" site. Really spectacular basalt formations cut through by a small river.
Be aware, there is a very steep descent on foot to get there from the main road. So there is a very steep ascent back to the road. And as it was hot that day, it was a challenge.
Luckily there are several clever merchants at the bottom selling cold beverages at low prices. So if you are down there, get your fluids up to where they need to be because you will sweat getting out of the gorge again.
Also take you time. We were on a bus tour and were not given enough time to really enjoy the whole gorge.

An amazing sight as you wander down the path - the sides are hexagonal balsalt columns. There's an entrance fee but well worth it. You can walk a very long way - there's a land train part way back if you're tired.

Visiting "Garni Temple", you cannot miss "Garni Gorge" and its awesome "Basaltic Organ" - the hidden pipes of Armenia! Due to volcanic activities, basalt rock formations seem like columns sculpted by extraordinary craftsmen! Just breathtaking! You can walk down all the way from "Garni Temple" on the cliff's edge above, or hire one of the many existing 4WD vehicles with local drivers. Right there, you will immediately understand why "Basaltic Organ" is also known as "Symphony of Stones"! Enjoy!

In the shadow (at certain times during the day literally) lies basaltic organ, volcanic masterpiece. It can be seen in the gorge from the temple, however to get there you better get a pair of tracking shoes and be in good walking condition.
Visit is absolute must if you have enough free time to walk around.

These certainly look like a prehistoric organ.
There are hundreds of basalt pillars that line the gorge that make a stunning sight.

The Basaltic Organ is an amazing structure. The cooling lava on the surface millennia ago formed basalt rock but as it cooled it formed long hexagonal columns that resemble a church organ. It is quite wonderful and well worth a visit, especially if your are going to the nearby Garni Temple.

The road to the organs is accessible pretty much only by a 4x4. The ride is bumpy and uncomfortable, but the gorges are much more serene than the ride down. The columns created by the solidified volcanic rock are some of the most unique in the world. Highly recommend - will leave you truly amazed.

From Garni temple one can an idea how these column look. Going closer is simply amazing. A 4 wheel drive car is advisable because of the steep and uneven road. It takes around 10 minutes from the asphalted street to get there but for me it was really worthwhile.

This site is very much like the Devil's Causeway in western Ireland or Devil's Tower in the US state of Wyoming, but is seen from the bottom whereas the former is seen from the top and the latter is seen from the sides. The volcanic lava cooled to form these 6-sided columns which are interesting geologically, but some would not find a visit worth the time and effort it takes to get there because the road is on a 12% downward grade which makes it unwise for tour busses to go. Molten lava cools in such a way that it forms these 6-sided structures, because the hexagon takes the least amount of energy to form.

Great natural rock formation, as organ pipes. Nice for a walk, from old bridge by the river, to the view of Garni temple on the hill, and back. Formations should be formed by vulcanic lava pushing/reforming rocks.
