Once you find an entrance, you can roam free among the beautiful stones as you see fit!
The information signs around the site are good but difficult to read as they have been bleached in the sun, these could do with updating.
As the area is unattended, there is some litter & graffiti in places, which is a shame but I have seen areas like this in a lot worse states elsewhere.
That said, I was very happy with my visit. I could spend a full afternoon here, wondering the site, pondering the history around me. With no entrance fee, I may well go back again tomorrow!
It obviously is very hot here with no shelter, perhaps wear a hat & take water with you.
Also, look out for the local lizards that call the stones home! 🦎😊

Beautiful ruins inhabited by a collection of cats, doves and reptiles. The altar of Dionysus in the south section is definitely worth the few minutes walk. Unfortunately locals and tourists alike use these wonderful places as rubbish bins, so maybe bring a litter picker. I’m not sure if guided tours are available but i would definitely pay for one if i went again.

The Ancient Agora is in the centre of Kos town and is free to enter so it should be on every visitors " to see" list.
We really enjoyed wandering around the site. However, it really needs a bit of tidying up! Some parts are very overgrown and there is litter around although there are bins provided. It's impossible to read many of the information plaques as they are old and discoloured by the sun.
On the plus side, it's free to enter and you can roam around wherever you want. Locals use it as a cut through in the centre of town and it's great to be so close to a huge historical site without everywhere being sectioned off due to safety concerns.

This place is great. It is close to the town centre, free to enter and plenty to see. There are so many ruins and relicts to look at and there are some really useful information points.
It was very hot when I visited so I probably didn't stay as long as I wanted as there was limited shade and little to no breeze.
That being said, if you aren't in a hurry you could always go and get a drink or lunch and come back later.

Was really looking forward to visiting this place. I'm not sure if it is because it is the beginning of the season but, like a lot of Kos, we found it to be run down and grubby. We visited twice for the benefit of the doubt but there were no information plaques, completely over run by weeds and no way to explore most of the ruins as the paths were covered in weeds/plants. Such a shame as it looked like it could be great. If this was in the UK it would be pristine. Bin bags and graffiti were on show. Disappointed.

This is a popular site in Kos town. It generally closes on Tuesdays. But is free at present due to the Covid crisis.
There's a lot to see on this extensive site, and much of it is well preserved and presented. Spent a really interesting couple of hours here. Definitely worth the visit.

Sad. This site holds history of over 2000 years old yet you would not know it to see how it is kept. No signage to the area, unkempt with no information plaques left on their stands. Looks like everything has just been left to rot. Appreciate keeping it would cost but they could charge for entry as a tourist attraction. I was very disappointed by the lack of appreciation.

I really was in my element here and I could have spent another hour walking around were it not for the heat! ☀️ 💦 The ruins were beautiful and I love the way they’re generally left without railings/chains etc and tourists are trusted to use their common sense so the feel is more authentic. There were signs dotted about but they were very old and I still couldn’t make sense of what was what when I was looking at the arial image of the agora. I would have really appreciated more info. But do you know what, for free, I can’t really complain! It’s a must see

The ruins were fascinating to look at, with almost intact mosaic floors and structures with some wall tiles too. Some parts were a bit of a trek through over grown bushes to see anything of interest but it was awesome to learn a bit of history about Kos and its Roman roots. Then the earthquake that destroyed the site then what remained of it.
However, there was a lot of glass on the paths which made walking quite dangerous depending on footwear. Upon our visit we also found used underwear and lots of litter which is sad in a place of historical significance. Also some parts were only accessible via stairs which isn't good for people in wheelchairs.
It was free though and I couldnt expect more or less. Recommend for people to check out.

Definitely something I would tell people to see. Very impressive. Lots of ground to cover. Amazing how much is still there n tact. No entrance fee. Basically in the middle of town, location wise. Uncovered so be careful on a hot day.

In tge site is a room with a cistern and pottery urns. What wsd this
Written August 10, 2018
As this was a market are with drainage and sewage channels, the cistern most likely was used for storing the water, probably to allow for washing and drinking. The urns would have been used for carrying the water to other areas of the agora.
No one is absolutely certain of the exact nature of this area, but this appears to be the most likely use.
Even in ancient times, a certain degree of hygiene and cleanliness existed, hence the drainage and sewage channels.
