Amazing story and spectacular scenery
Sep 2019
Don't miss visiting this place when you visit Cascia. There is a lot of history in this place. But be prepared to hike up the mountain top.

Peaceful place worth visiting. It's where Saint Rita used to meditate.
Sep 2019
Inside the chapel is the rock where Saint Rita used to sit and meditate. It's a wonderful place at the top of the mountain. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the top. You do that slowly while praying and meditating. Recommended.

Challenging climb, but great view from the top!

The so-called "Scoglio" is actually a cliff located in Roccaporena, a small town in the Umbria Region. It is said to be the place where St. Rita of Cascia used to go to pray in solitude. It is located not too far from her native house. The climb is quite challenging, but you can take your time and meditate along the way since there is a Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) for pilgrims. Once you reach the top, you'll find a small chapel and some prints on a rock slab claimed to be marks left by St. Rita herself. The view from the top is breath-taking. It offers you a great view of the whole town of Roccaporena and of neighboring mountains and valleys. The Scoglio is one place you should never miss when you visit St. Rita's birthplace!

A beautiful, tranquil place
Oct 2016 • Solo
Cascia is a beautiful, small village and to have the opportunity to see Saint Rita was amazing.
I got the bus from Rome Tibutina that leaves at 7:30 ( or at least it was supposed to.... the bus turned up at 08:10!... only in Italy!). The bus is Flixbus and is €14 return! Very good value. It goes from stop number 12. It is a beautiful journey through the mountains and the bus driver was friendly and drove carefully! There is one stop on the way to use the toilet if you need to.

Cascia is lovely. You have approx 5 hours there before the bus returns at 3:30. My advice would be to go to the monestary first as it closes between 12:30 and 2:30. If however you don't ( like me), there is still time to see the monestary at 2:30 before catching the return bus.

The atmosphere in the church is very special and there are lots of benches around Cascia where you can just sit and enjoy the views.
There are many gift shops, a bar/ cafe and a cash point if you need it. The gift shops only accept cash.

If you want to visit the rock where St Rita prayed and drink from the fountain this is about 5 km outside of Cascia from the roundabout where her statue is. It is not really walkable if you are just travelling from Rome for the day as I did. I didn't realise this from the reviews onTrip Advisor until I got there.

I had a very special day in Cascia. It is just the right amount of time and a real privilege to see Saint Rita. Be sure to go.
