If you are in Rome and planning to visit Sainte Rita's Monastery in Cascia, you might find it a bit challenging to make arrangements. You might consider taking a private shuttle or taxi but it will be very costly (around 600 euros). The best option is to get to Tiburtina Train and Metro Station. If you are located near Termini station just take the metro line B to get there. Once you get to Tiburtina station get out of the station and cross the road to the Bus station. Everyday except Sundays, there is a Sulga (Name of the bus company) bus that leaves the station at exactly 7:30 am to Cascia. So it is recommended you be there at least 15 min before. It is not possible to buy the tickets ahead but don't worry. The bus will be parked at bay #12. Once there, just tell the driver that you are going to Cascia and hop on. You will get the chance to buy the tickets once the bus reaches the Terni bus station exactly an hour and a half after departure. The round trip costs 14 euros per passenger. At Serravalle, some passengers might change buses but you have to stay in the same bus. You will reach Cascia in 3 hours. Once there, it is easy to find your way to the Basilica and monastery. If you wish to visit Sainte Rita's hometown, Roccaporena, just go to the hotel Delle Rose and ask at the reception for a transfer to Roccaporena. A driver will get you there and then come back to pick you up later for 5 euros per passenger. You can have lunch at this small town. There is a small self service restaurant and bar facing the sanctuary of Roccaporena. It is not bad if you like to try local cuisine. If you wish to visit the monastery and check the miraculous vine that Ste Rita planted and other personal stuff of the Sainte, the monastery opens its doors at very specific times. You can check the schedule as listed on the door of the monastery.

Much of this 13th century monastery has been preserved ... its walls, small cells for cloistered nuns, chapel, courtyard, wall paintings, etc. People who visit this place associate it particularly with St. Rita of Cascia. In fact, highlight of the visit to this monastery is a peek into the famous Saint's private cell, her original coffin, her ring of religious consecration, the crucifix painted on one of the monastery's walls that gave the Saint her stigmata, the vine that miraculously returned to life from a dry stick after the Saint had patiently watered it upon the House Superior's order, the stingless bees that come out only twice a year, and so forth. The place is open to the public upon request. I suggest that you read something about the life of St. Rita first before visiting this place.

The trip to Casia is an out-of-the-way excursion, but it is a beautiful drive and the end result is a lovely small town, set among gentle mountains, lush pines and blooming roses. St. Rita, one of the Catholic Church's most important intercessors for difficult (impossible) situations, particularly domestic situations, lies in repose in a amazing well-preserved condition in a glass case inside this lovely small basilica. There is, of course, no entry fee here: Reflection and prayer are the keys to a divine response, if you may need her intercession. The town of Cascia is exquisitely picturesque, and though there are the souvenir shops one usually finds in the vicinity of religious shrines, nothing is over-bearing and the locals are quite pleasant. There are several spots to enjoy a fine lunch and many opportunities for beautiful photos, often some of the best 'souvenirs'. A must-see if you are driving and you may be on your way to the Adriatic coast. There are also tours that originate in Assisi.

Wonderful place where quiet and serenity are travel companions.
I recommend also going to Roccaporena and climbing the 330 steps, which lead to the rock of Santa Rita.

I went to Cascia on May 22, the feast day of the patron saint. The place is small but a symbol of the life of Saint Rita, in it there is a religious and historical significance.
On the occasion of the festival you can buy the rose, sold in the streets for the price of € 1, the same price for all banquets. In the morning you can attend Holy Mass, until 11.30 am, the last to bless the roses. Although it was said there were many people, they seemed well distributed.
You can see in the Church the relics of Santa Rita.Un trip that I recommend to do in May, or, summer time because the road is within Umbria is quite long and the road uncupa by the way. A place of prayer and spiritual gathering.

We happened upon it by chance and it was a wonderful visit, one of those that leaves you with something important on a spiritual level. A lady acted as a guide after mass, allowing us to visit the courtyard and a room of the monastery, telling the life of Saint Rita (about whom I knew almost nothing) in a simple and engaging way. It was a moment of true spirituality. Recommended for those who want to rediscover a climate of authentic faith.

A very crowded and evocative sanctuary, but also a very artefact. History and places of Santa Rita not to be missed during a stay full of faith.

Written May 6, 2018
Le visite guidate sono per il monasterio. Puoi sempre chiedere alla reception (guardando il santuario a sinistra) se ci sono visite guidate anche al santuario, anche se ho visto solo gruppi guidati dall’accompagnatore di gruppo...
