Another must see after Pitigliano, but a lot smaller Sorano, offers beautiful, narrow streets, which you can make in an hour or so. There is a town panorama spot just outside of the city, where you can leave your car and 5 minutes of walk will provide breathtaking view.
The coordinates for leaving the car: 42.68489, 11.70911
Panorama spot: 42.68432, 11.71055
And if you are not a lazy person, keep descending through the path until: 42.6837, 11.71091 for an even better view.

We took a detour through the eastern part of the Grosetto province in Southern Tuscany, to visit Sorano and Pitigliano en route to Orvieto from Montalcino.

I hadn’t even heard of Sorano, until a very informative post on Fodors (by Stu Dudley, an invaluable contributor), and I’m glad we took the effort of visiting. The view of Sorano spilling over the hilltop as we approached by car is breathtaking. We drove upto the top of the hill following our GPS and parked just outside the city, near what looked like a castle. We paused to admire the view of the rooftops from a terrace and then began to descend the stairs into the town itself. We took several twists and turns along the pedestrian stone pathways and enjoyed getting lost in the many passages and archways. It’s hard to imagine that the town is still occupied (the town was absolutely silent, and I think we saw all of 3 locals) and feels like you’ve gone back in time to an altogether different era.

A very welcome surprise indeed (we spent over an hour there) and seemingly off the tourist radar.

Fully preserved nice medieval town, surrounded by deep canyons from three sides and with hilltop fortress (today it is hotel) on forth side. Sunning views on wooden hills and ancient caves. Narrow streets, old buildings, steps, quiet lanes and passes. Felt yourself in centuries-old time, simply walk through the town - it not a big one.

A couple of hours is enough to see the Old Town City Center. Very nice mountain stone building houses.
The town is made of small narrow streets, up and downs, nice restaurants, very friendly people and free parking spaces. There are also many street cats which the town people are taking good care of them.

Loved this village! Tiny but so fun to explore and so many photo opps around every corner! There was an adorable, inexpensive olive wood shop at one end near the tiny piazza. It doesn't take long to stroll through this town, but it was wonderful to watch locals and discover local restaurants.

Many will say to skip Sorano, and stay in Pitigliano for example, but there is a charm in this place that you have to experience, it is a Museum in the Open, just so quaint, and with a nice hotel, where we stayed, the La Fortezza, the place can serve as a base to visit the region and there is so much to visit.

Worth every minute.

You can see this town in two parts. First, park at the to by the more contemporary citadel and walk down be aware that you have to walk back up). When you get to the bottom, you're in the historical center which is very interesting to walk around, and also very compact. Just take it all in.

This is a nice village on your trip in Tuscany. Less tourists then on other places. Charming to stroll.

Sorano is a beautiful hill town in Italy that has not been overrun with tourists. It's charming, rustic and interesting. Spend some time walking the ancient small streets.
