Hidden gem
Nov 2019 • Couples
This is a hidden gem in Macau! Just a 5 minute walk from the ruins of St Paul. It is in a quiet street, and a nice historical feel. There’s also a Portuguese shop inside to pick up some nice treats :)

Mercearia Portuguesa at Albergue SCM
Sep 2019
Mercearia Portuguesa is a small shop setup in the back of the Albergue SCM (Albergue da Santa Casa da Misericordia) courtyard in the St. Lazarus District. Opening hours are 11am to 7pm daily.

Here you can find a small range of products from Portugal that can make good purchases during your visits to Macau. These include canned foods, sauces, Port wine as well as some handmade and other retail items that make for good souvenirs.

Interestingly, this is one of the only places where you can purchase bottles of Ginjinha, a very popular cherry based liqueur from Portugal that is difficult to find in Macau. I like to buy Ginjinha when they have it here at Mercearia Portuguesa.

One of the most beautiful locations in Macau
Apr 2018 • Couples
Albergue SCM (Albergue da Santa Casa da Misericordia) is beautiful location in the St. Lazarus quarter perhaps the most European like place in Macau.

Here visitors will find a colonial style courtyard pastel yellow in colour, consistent with what you see with many Portuguese buildings around the city. There is a Portuguese restaurant, gift shop and an art exhibition room for visitors to enjoy. The ground within Albergue SCM is surfaced with Portuguese style cobblestones and there are two large camphor trees which provide plenty of shade and green colour to the square.

Visitors can conveniently enjoy a quick stop at Albergue SCM when passing through the area St. Lazarus Quarter, its located very near to quite a few minor attractions in the area.

Location for lion and dragon dances during CNY festivities
Feb 2018 • Solo
One of the places worth checking out during the annual Chinese New Year (CNY) festival is Albergue SCM which is a feature location for some of the dragon and lion dances put on during the holiday season.

Note: Do check the MGTO 'What's On Macau' online guide for schedule of events and activities to know the exact dates and times for performances at Albergue in the quiet yet beautiful St. Lazarus District of Macau.

One of the reasons I like to watch the performances here compared to places like Senado Square and A-Ma Temple is that here you are mostly devoid of crowds. Instead of several thousand people watching, there may be 40-50 others only. This means you can get up close to the performance and take much nicer pictures.

Note: Stand on the opposite side of the beautiful Albergue SCM colonial building and you can capture it in your photos and videos made during the lion and dragon dances.

Absolutely lovely
Dec 2016 • Couples
It is quaint, stylish, colonial and will make you feel like to just sit and relax and people watch. It reminded me of a plaza with the food, crafts, lounging, singing etc… It’s just a nice and peaceful environment and a nice place to rest your feet as you’ll walk a lot in Macau.

Albergue SCM
Dec 2015 • Friends
I went to Albergue SCM with my friends. At that day, there were many people selling creative things, and there were also some people singing songs. The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful. My friends told me that almost every week there will be a performance.
The architecture in Albergue SCM is Portuguese style, which is historical. There is a small shop sells Portuguese things, such as soap, food and so on. They are a little expensive. The owner of the shop is a beautiful Portuguese woman. It is said that she is an Portuguese actress. Now she stops her career and lives in Macau. She looks nice.
After I came back, I look for the information of Albergue SCM. Its real name is The Home of The Poor, because during the second war, it provided a living place for refugees. Later it became a house for old women. It has existed for about 100 years.
Now it is the cultural and creative center of Macau. If you are interested in history, European architecture, culture and creativity, it will be a good place for you.

Well decorated during the Mid-Autumn festival period
Sep 2015 • Solo
One of the places that I enjoy spending time during Mid-Autumn festival each year is the Albergue SCM courtyard in St. Lazarus district. The is one of the most pleasant European like locations in Macau that is neatly decorated for the holiday festivals each September.

At this time of year, you can see traditional Mid-Autumn lanterns hanging throughout the courtyard, adding a bit more charm to this to this beautiful location. They sometimes setup stage here for festival performances during the evenings when it cools down.

Here you will also find small art exhibition space that is usually open (free) for visitors. Exhibitions are in collaboration with nearby Tap Seac Gallery and the local Creative Industries art supporters. There is also a neat little shop specialising in Portuguese products called Marcearia that is open during holiday periods. Further, if you want a traditional Portuguese meal, the local restaurant Albergue 1601 is quite popular and serves up a good African Chicken.

In the end, the Albergue SCM courtyard is a neat place to find in Macau if you want to see beautiful colonial style buildings, Portuguese style tiled pavements and enjoy being in a much quieter and peaceful part of the city. It is even better visiting during a holiday or festive period of the year.

A lovely corner in St. Lazarus District
Aug 2015 • Friends
If you have visited Macau for a few times, I'm sure you have visited almost all the landmarks in the historical centre of Macau.
Albergue SCM is worth the walk. It is about 10 minutes walk from Senado Square.
You will fall in love with this place once you see the 2 trees in the courtyard. There's a exhibition gallery and also a tiny little boutique shop. There's also a nice restaurant called 1601 Albergue in the same courtyard. The surroundings are equally fun to explore.

Albergue SCM: Beautiful courtyard and nice place to visit in St. Lazarus District
May 2014 • Couples
Albergue SCM is a historic location found in the St. Lazarus District of Macau, where you can find a exhibition gallery and area within a lovely inner courtyard, alongside a nice little shop called Mercearia Portuguesa and a nice restaurant called 1601 Albergue.

Technically, Albergue SCM represents the entire yellow coloured complex and courtyard and it is one of the most beautiful individual spots in Macau, with the presence of a lovely large Camphor tree covered in green vines and foliage. It is a beautiful setting and one of several gorgeous areas to visit in St. Lazarus district.

The little shop here is a nice stop, selling imported products from Portugal. We also like 1601 Albergue for the African Chicken and lovely alfresco dining environs. If you visit on weekends, you will often find small performances, concerts, fairs and other arranged activities taking place within the Albergue SCM grounds or just outside on the tiled street beyond the compound.

We stop at Albergue SCM regularly when visiting the St. Lazarus district of Macau and find it well worth at stop for lunch or even just 15-20 minutes to have a look around and take a few pictures before moving on to other attractions in this area of the city.
