Always a good band playing, service is prompt. A good place for a fun night out.. Fellas watch out for the girls. Most of them are a bit 'costly'

One of the best deals in Lion's MGM is the live music. The management is really careful with the quality of the bands, even when the house band is away and they have to choose another to replace them. The drinks are OK, not too expensive and the place is quite spacious and pleasant, with some big sofas and cool lighting. You can go around 23:00 to start crowding the place, but the dancing floor will only be rocking by 1 a.m. (depending on who's there, of course)

No longer in operation. Check before considering visiting the MGM for bars/live music. The nearest bar of similar quality is Heart Bar across the street in The Ascott. For music and bars the nearby Bar Street is a more downscale option.

The long running house band "Soul Republic" has recently been replaced by a new band - East. Not sure whether this was a cost cutting measure in Macau's currently troubled times, or a clever idea to offer a set with more diverse and Asian songs. If the latter then the band needs replacing ASAP because music is not math. To describe this band as wooden would be polite. People were walking in and leaving within minutes.
Given the quality of the entertainment the drinks prices are ridiculous.
Very disappointing.

Having visited the Lion Bar many times over recent years they would always guarantee a lively night with good talented musicians playing R&B and Soul. Drinks are always a bit pricey but never a problem for me given the high quality of the band.
I dragged some friends there on Friday night and I instantly knew something was adrift as at mid night there were only about 10 people in the whole place - more staff then customers.
After a while a Chinese/Asian band appeared on stage and in 10 secs it soon became apparent why the place was empty. This band named East, which could at best be described as amateurish managed to frighten us away after 3 songs. They were embarrassing to watch and the vocalist was frequently out of tune and the whole act seemed like 2nd rate karaoke. We left with our drinks half consumed. I really cannot understand how MGM have not worked out why their bar is empty. There are numerous bars in HK with much better quality of musicians so I do not think MGM have gone to much effort in their recruitment process. Great shame as I really used to like going to the Lion Bar but for now I suggest anyone wanting to see a good live band in Macau then you are going to need to head across to the Venetian.
I clearly knew something had changed big time when I visited on a Friday night

Open late with a live covers band. Service is good, although decor is a little dated. Drinks are expensive.

Another venue surprisingly missing from the Nightlife list for Macau.
This is a huge bar, come club, come live music venue, in the middle of the ground floor of the MGM. It opens Tuesday through Sunday.
Despite what is claimed elsewhere by other venues this is the classiest and most cosmopolitan of the Macau nightlife venues. The main attraction is the live band - currently Soul Republic. They are a class act of International musicians playing cover versions with a fair amount of improvisation. Ther set gets mixed around a bit nightly. Nonetheless this is not really the place to go to, too regularly or it gets a bit samey. A DJ/VJ (Dj Ted od Dj Butch) fills in between the bands sets. There are usually 4 sets a night starting at around 10.30p through to about 04.00a (Macau is a late nite city!)
The venue has its eccentricities. The clientele is usually a mix of upmarket Westerners - usually from conventions in town, a few locals who head in early before heading home after work or to the clubs, Chinese gamblers taking a break, and well ----professional ladies. But the mix and atmosphere is good. Be warned given the mix the place can be very unpredictable - one night heaving and the next night dead. It is usually liveliest around midnight for the band’s second set.
There is a dance area in front of some large booths with tables before the stage. The booths tend to be reserved for "high rollers" and as a result those who are likely to dance - and encourage the Chinese visitors to dance - tend to get situated away from the dance area on the upper tier, by the large room length bar. This is mentioned because it does lead to the bizarre spectacle of the band trying to get people on to the dance floor - who refuse to move from dancing at the bar because they will have nowhere to return to if they risk going on the floor!
Finally note that there is English language Stand Up Comedy on one or two Sundays of each month. The headliner is usually an International name (the guy who came 2nd in America's Got Talent is scheduled for fall 2014). The main act is supported by a couple of short sets from local Ex Pats. Thoroughly recommended. Entrance for these events is free.
Overall great venue albeit slightly odd layout. Class acts but the venue management is a bit lacking (There are regular complaints on various hotel review websites about the club staff) - also beware of leaving nearly finished drinks unattended, they get cleaned away indecently quickly.
Dress code is reasonably relaxed but the norm is smart casual.

If you just want to relax with your friends, then that bar is not suitable to you. It is just a place for get crazy. The music is loud and you completely cannot chat with your friends.
