Minor attraction dedicated to Macau's oldest charity
Apr 2018 • Solo
Macau Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society is a lesser known historic attraction just off Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro in the Historic Centre of Macau. Dedicated to the history of the oldest charity in Macau, this is also a place worth passing by to see an interesting blend of European and Chinese architecture.

The Macau Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society is located around the corner from the Pawn Shop Museum and can be visited together conveniently. Opening hours are 9.30 to 5.30pm daily.

Charming old building located in the central area!
Mar 2017
This old building is just right next to the prawn shop museum. It is also located in the leal senardo area. It is a very charming old building with colorful glass windows and arches. The outside is well maintained and refurbished.

Eighth stop on the 'Footsteps into the Historic Centre' Walking Route in Macau
Jul 2016 • Couples
The Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society building (free entry) is the 8th stop on the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) 'Footsteps in the Historic Centre' self-walking tour. This is a nice trail to consider if you want to explore parts of the UNESCO World Heritage area as well as other historic locations around the City Centre.

The 'Footsteps in the Historic Centre' walk starts at Avenida da Praia Grande, making several stops at Senado Square before continuing north to attractions along Ave. Almeida Ribeiro where you can visit the Traditional Pawn Shop Museum and Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society building.

Interestingly, this is Macau's oldest charity organisation, which is located in an architecturally interesting historical building. Here you can see 1920's style Shanghai plaster columns, Art Deco style window panels as well as other European architectural features. There is exhibition space and courtyard within this attraction providing 15-20 minutes worth of viewing. Opening hours are 9.30am to 5.30pm daily.

Note: Other stops on the 'Footsteps of the Historic Centre' route include Avenida da Praia Grande, several places at Senado Square such as Leal Senado, The Old Post Office, Van Sam Kai Vui Kun Temple and St. Dominic's Church. You will then see the Traditional Pawn Shop Museum, Carpentry Guildhall, Rua de Camilo Pessanha, Rua da Felicidade, the Cheng Peng Theatre, Rua da Caldeira, followed by stops at and around Praca de Ponte e Horte and inner harbour.

Tung Sin Tong Historical Archive Exhibition Hall - Free exhibition, nice architecture
Apr 2014 • Couples
The Macau Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society is the oldest charity in Macau, beginning in 1892 and serving from this building just off Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro since 1924. From this premise, the charity served the public, mostly as a health and medicine clinic for many decades.

In 2012, the building was reopened to the public as the Tung Sin Tong Historical Archive Exhibition Hall (free entry). Now you visit and learn about this charity's long history of service in Macau via a video program in Cantonese (English caption) as well as 5 touch-screen multimedia monitors providing visitors an interactive means towards learning about the charity and building's past.

You can also see a few interesting items like the Porcelain Photo Display, the Confucius Shrine and the longest couplet in Macau (circa 1895) in the small courtyard. The building itself remains mostly in its original state, making it very interesting to look at. Here you can see 1920s Shanghai plaster columns, Chinese style hexagonal tiles and lovely Art Deco style window panes within the building as well as traditional European exterior and facade and classic Portuguese style pastel colour, which is commonly seen in Macau.

Overall, this is one of many interesting historic buildings that you can make a quick visit to in Macau. It is located right next to the Pawn Shop Museum on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. Together, these two landmarks can be comfortably visited in 20-30 minutes.

Tip: The Macau Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society is included in the 'Charitable Organizations' historic walk, which is sponsored by the Department of Cultural Activities and Recreation of Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau. You can visit their Macau Streets website to learn more information about similar historic walks in Macau.
