This small square in front of Macau's main cathedral offers a European touch to the city. It is now a bustling place with tourists flocking to major attractions and sampling local snacks. The tiles around the largo add color to the place.

Cathedral Square is a little known spot in the Macau World Heritage centre just next to the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady otherwise known as Sé or simply - 'Cathedral'. This is a small cobblestone square with bench seating, seasonal decorations and a few permanent fixtures that are worth a few minutes to enjoy.

Here you find a nice fountain with an eclectic chalice-shaped structure topped with an iron globe and cross. It features a decoratively carved column base with dolphins plus seahorses near its top spouting water into an octagonal shaped basin. Nearby there is a simple cross sculpture as well.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of Cathedral Square are the circa (1830-40s) blue-and-white tiled murals which line the lower and backside of the square. The murals depict landscape scenes of Macau as seen through the eyes of 19th-century resident artist George Chinnery. They are beautiful and free artworks that most overlook while racing around the world heritage area. Give them a few minutes if you are interested in see what Macau would have looked like nearly two centuries ago.

For those interested in viewing more of George Chinnery, there is a gallery at Macau Museum of Art dedicated to his works. You will also find his tomb at the Protestant Cemetery at Camoes Square which is also part of the Macau World Heritage area.

Cathedral Square is a small place just to the south of the Cathedral of the Nativity of our Our Lady in the city centre of Macau. There are a few interesting things to see here including a large standing cross and a fountain decorated with seahorse and dolphin spouts.

You will also find the 19th-century blue tile murals by George Chinnery (circa 1835-40) located along the lower walls of the square. These are delightful murals showcasing early scenes of Portuguese colony as they were seen through the eyes of Macau's most important artist of that time period.

You can find Cathedral Square, just 1 minute walk from Senado Square and Dominic's Square by way of Travessa de São Domingos. It is an easy to find and convenient place to pass by while exploring the World Heritage area.

This church is near the other historic sites of Macau such as the Senado Square and Ruins of St. Paul so one can just spend a little more walking to reach this place. There is a square with a fountain and a cross at the front of the church. There are several benches at the square where one can just stop and take a breather, cool heels from the walking done around Macau.

Cathedral Square is a minor attraction in the Macau World Heritage area that is infrequently visited by visitors. However, there are a couple interesting things to see, including the 19th century murals created by George Chinnery.

Upon the small square you can find a nice, modest fountain with seahorse spouts and views of the important Cathedral. However, the most interesting feature of this attraction would be the Chinnery murals found on the wall, located at the backside of the wall supporting the square.

To find the murals, simply use one of two small descending alleys found on either side of the square. These are joined by another narrow pedestrian lane. Along this small passageway you will find two corner fountains and a yellow wall and a row of 19th century blue tiled murals that are credited to George Chinnery (circa 1835-1840).

The murals are Portuguese style, making use of blue tiles. The scenes are local and Chinese inspired, historic image of Macau during the first half of the 19th century. Scenes include the area around Ave. Praia Grande, which ran along the sea during these times as well as a street scene just beyond St. Domingos Church, just 1-2 minute walk from this location.

The Chinnery murals are attractive works that are nice to find in this area of the Historic City Centre. They are similar to some of his watercolour, ink sketches and other works featuring Macau during this period. These can be found in the Museum Art Museum (MAM) on the Macau Peninsula.

For those with a particular interest in George Chinnery, you can also find his resting place at the Protestant Cemetery at Camoes Square in Macau.

This is a tiny square next to Cathedral that features a small fountain and center cross and several park benches to rest your feet before or after visiting the Cathedral located at this site. There is little to see on the actual square itself, however, if you walk around back, you can see some nice tiled murals, against a pastel yellow colored wall. Also two corner fountains help great a nice little alley to view and take a few pictures.

Cathedral Square is located very close to the collection of attractions on Senado Square, just a short walk down the short alleyway called Travessa de Domingoes. You will see a restaurant called Bao Mesa, just walk down that path less than 2 minutes and you will find yourself at Senado Square, also right in front of St. Dominic's church.

Other important World Heritage attractions in this area include Casa de Lou Kau Manion, St. Dominic's, Senado Square and the Leal Senado Building as well as the Ruin's of St. Paul. There are more in the area but these are the more interesting and important ones to visit.

Overall, Cathedral Square is not a priority visit for those with limited time in Macau but might be worth a quick find just to see the tiled wall of the square. It is also worth finding for those staying longer in Macau, seeking to find more of the World Heritage attractions in the city.

An iconic place was full of historical value, we came in the morning after walking for a while from the 'ruin church'. It was not too far and a very comfortable walking experience, while we blend with local people that just starting their activities.

In the morning it's not too hot and there are seats to rest with excellent angles for taking photos. This place reminds me of some corners of old European cities.

One of the nice squares of Macau, resembling a European square and dominated with the Catholic Cathedral. Macau is full of places to enjoy and relax, and this square is one of them

It was amazing walking out of an alley and entering Cathedral Square. The square is dominated by the Cathedral, but apparently the other yellow buildings currently house the Roman Catholic diocese in Macau. You can enter the church, providing there is nothing going on, which we did and the stained glass is beautiful. The rest of the square is a lovely area to sit (were it not so hot).

After visiting the Cathedral it is good to look at this charming square and take in the atmosphere of this place. It creates the delusional feeling like all of a sudden you are back in Europe. This location also offers a chance to grab a snack or ice cream or other refreshments choosing from one of many vendors of the area.
