We visited Montgarri as part of a 4X4 trip through the Spanish and French Pyrenees.
Most of the old village is derelict and ruined. What remains today is the pretty church and the Refuge Hostel.
Our guide told us the fascinating story about the escape route from southern France over the snowy Pyrenees, down to Montgarri. This route was used by Jews escaping the Nazis during the last years of WWII. The route was used in winter, when the chance of running into a German patrol was scarce. At Montgarri, the villagers and the church fed and treated the refugees and helped them with their onward journey.
Altogether an estimated 10,000 (!!!) Jews were rescued through Montgarri.
Montgarri is also a good starting point for beautiful hikes of various lengths and difficulty degrees.
Beautiful Place!! Interesting Story!! Great Hikes!!

Nice place, and typical refuge (summer and winter). You find a special ambience, and it's very bucolic space.

We were 4 adults and one kid ( 14 month old ) and we did the dogsleigh trip . A wonderful first time event for all of us . The owner is a very interesting guy. He shares his passion and his knowledge of the dogs .
No need to go far north or south to feel the ambiance of an expedition . The abandoned village of Montgarri is a must to see

First some background. My 13 year old son and I booked the Dogsledding with lunch at Montgarri Refugi. During the booking we clearly stated my sons age as 13 and they came back with a quote which included the price as 2 adults for the dogsledding (over 10 considered as an adult), but for the meal he was considered a child (assume as not going to have any alcohol). Quote provided all the breakdown and so did the receipt once I paid the deposit and confirmed the booking.

Firstly, the dogsledding was excellent and on its own would have rated 5 stars. The scenery (clearly helped by fresh snow and clear blue skies) was stunning, but this was complemented by our excellent musher who once he realized we were English, even though we spoke Spanish switched into English, and provided interesting information regarding the dogs and happily answered all of our questions. He clearly had a strong bond with his dogs.

Unfortunately, it all started to go wrong when we arrived at the Refugi for lunch. A queue of people waiting to be seated. After a few minutes we got seated. In the room we were seated in it should be noted that there was a group of 4 that had been seated just as we arrived in the queue, plus another table of 2 (these people were eating their starter before our order was taken) and a 4 that had already been seated (and had already ordered). The waiter firstly took the order from the group of four that were seated just before us and shortly afterwards, probably 5 or so minutes after we had been seated another couple arrived and were seated at the table next to us. After about another 10 minutes the waiter arrived and proceeded to take the order from the people seated after us and then us. Also note it is a set menu, so it’s more about confirming what it is and the drinks. Drinks arrived after another 5 minutes followed by the starters for the couple next to us. Ours then followed, before the table of four got theirs! This haphazard approach went on through the whole lunch arrive with the waiter not seeming to know who to serve, nor did he seem capable of bringing food into the dining room and then clearing plates on his way out. Our neighbours got their main course at the same time as the table of 2 that were on their starter when our order was taken, but then took another 15 minutes before ours arrived. Clearly we weren’t the only ones aware of the slow / poor service. Our neighbour kindly cut a couple of pinchos of entrecôte for my son and I whilst we waited for our food, and said “a small pincho to keep you going whilst you wait”.

To be fair, if we had been anywhere else we would have walked out long before the due to the poor service.

To top things off, it then only got worse when we asked for the bill (you have to pay for the dogsledding and meal separately even though all booked together with the same company) and was promptly charge for 2 adults. Despite showing the email with the information and the confirmed age of my son and the receipt all showing child’s meal they were adamant I should pay for 2 adults as he had an adults meal (he didn’t have any wine or the cassis or pacharan served with the coffee (which he also didn’t have), not did he have dessert.

Had we have known up front I would not have had an issue, but to have clear evidence of what was agreed and booked and the fact the service was so poor I did not see any reason to pay more. In the end our musher stored in and resolved the issue and apologized for a mix up between the office and the Refugi (another star for the musher), but he shouldn’t have had to.

Overall a great experience was soured by the experience at the Refugi (despite the poor service the food is not that bad). Montgarri has all the facilites to make this a truly once in a lifetime experience, but only if they can resolve the poor levels of service at the Refugi.

We’ve give a 2 star rating. The dogsledding was 5 star, whilst the Refugi experience was probably not even worth 1.

There are several walks from the Plan Beret Parking area - Montgarri being one destination. The waling paths are of varying grades. The path to Montgarri is on the whole good and not challenging.
Be prepared for rapidly changing weather and have suitable clothing available.

Emotional, speechless.
This day was truly an incredible experience. We took the sledge ride with 12 huskies on the 7km journey to Montgarri Restaurant. Where we had a fantastic meal and wine.
This trip is not cheap, and so it shouldn't be,for the organisation and care for the dogs is amazing.
Thank you again.we will be back soon

I have ben in Montgarri several times, Winter with lots of snow, spring with a bit of snow, summer with just all green ... It is so beautiful at any time!

It is just a short distance from the Beret Parking, and once there one can have a drink at the Refugio or simply return and enjoy the landscape.

Last time we went there we picnique by the river, where there is a little pond that one can swimm in a hot summer day ( the water is freezing). A great experience for the whole family!

If going in winter/ spring, you might need raquets or very good boots and sticks. I did not have raquets during the spring and could manage ... Took a bit longer!

A dog sled trip to Montgarri was great. Not cheap but really worth the experience. Well organised, good mushers, and great mountain food for lunch. Highly recommended.

Secluded restaurant in the woods with good homey food and wines. Good fireside cooking in an old refuge. Friendly service complemented a good lunch.
