Very nice square with a local market at the time we visited it. Restaurants all around bordering the square.

This is the city’s main square, and as such boats quite a few restaurants, sights (church), municipal buildings and businesses.

And it’s actually a very good looking square!

One of the most beautiful sites in the heart of Vila Real de Santo António.

Spent the day with friends visiting Vila Real de Santo Antonio. There was an antiques market in the square so enjoyed a stroll around the stalls, after that had a walk along the promenade, then to a cafe for a great tosta mista. A very pleasant day exploring the the town....

A very pleasant surprise to find such a beautiful square in the centre of the Vila de San Antonio. The monument is very striking. It is surrounded by yet more architecure which really needs to be seen.A couple of roads away canbe found the main road of typical tourist shops containig towels ,tea towels, aprons, cork merchandise of every descriptionn, and surprisingly most goods are of good value

After passing the boat yards and blocks of flats, we were worried that the town wouldn’t be very attractive but after passing some interesting art pieces, the marina we came to the town centre which was very attractive and traditional in design and very busy for the time of year

We came on the train from Olhao and we did not have great expectations of VRSA. In the end, we were very pleasantry surprised and the highlight has to be the Praca Marques de Pombal. In 1774 Marques de Pombal created the current grid pattern of the town and its streets as well as the highlight, the very attractive main square with its fine buildings. The pedestrianisation and restoration has created a very attractive and large main square for the town with a number of cafes and restaurants, most very reasonably priced. It is the highlight of VRSA, followed by the riverside.

The 1755 earthquake became wordily known for the destruction of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. In fact it destroyed many coastal cities from the South of Portugal, as it happened with Vila Real de Santo António. Apart from downtown Lisbon, this square it’s probably the best example of the Pombal architecture (name of the prime minister at the time). Enjoy!

Very pretty square with a nice church too. Liked the feel of Vila Real as we wandered around. Not a huge place but good to combine with a trip to Ayamonte across the river.

Travelled here by ferry from Ayamonte (a short journey on a local ferry (about 15-20 miutes duration). Amazing market extending the length of the port selling goods of every description including pottery, kitchenware, clothes, bags, ironmongery etc, etc. The town itself is most attractive and a further market was operating in the main square de Pombal also selling a variety of local foods, caged birds, clothing and leather goods. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, an abundance of eateries, shops and a lovely buzzy atmosphere. Very well worth a visit.
