Old an interesting
Aug 2017 • Couples
This old and interesting area of small villages off minorities is very pleasant to see.
Lots of old buildings, bridges etc. Of course they live off tourist now but you get a feeling how it was like in the old days. I hope they keep it preserved like it is now and do not turn it in to another Lijang.

Visited the area in November 2016 recomended by our guide book as one of the top things to see in Guangxi: extremely disapointing..

The villages are turned into a show of decadence. Hordes of tourists, trash and construction everywhere (mostly hotels I assume), while the village people seem not to be getting much of this touristic development - which is probaly the purpose of those running the show.. to keep "aunthenticity".
Best of it was actually fields outside the villages. Passed through some tea fields on the way to Jishang.. which has no tourists but has absolutely nothing to see.
However if you go to this region you will probably see much better landscapes at Yangshuo.

Not recomended

Deep in the villages
Nov 2015 • Couples
We came here with our tour group and spent a couple of hours walking around after having lunch up on the 'tree house' of a restaurant right off the Yongji bridge on the village side. We walked to three different villages and saw the real life of the minority people. We did not see any shows but enjoyed just simply checking out the sights. Children were playing in the village during their lunch breaks in the early afternoon and it was fun just chatting with them a little. A memorable visit of the villages.

Cool old village

Place is setup for tourism but once you get past that and walk in a bit further it really is quite nice, the craftsmanship of building the towers and bridge structure just from wood was impressive.

Rustic Minority Villages With Good Tourism Infrastructure
Feb 2014 • Couples
Home to the famous Chengyang Bridge, the eight Dong minority villages north of Sanjiang makes for a nice side trip from Guilin.

We found the villages of Ma'An, Ping, Yan, Dong and Da the most interesting. They're also clustered together and most easy to get to. Ping Tan, which is a little out of the way (a 30 minutes stroll from Ma'an) is less touristy than the other villages and may be a good option for those looking for the 'real' Dong experience. Remember to climb to the top of Pingtan village for great views.

Ping Pu and Ji Chang, which are further up the main road are basically typical Chinese towns with concrete and cement buildings and a lot of redevelopment. It costs ¥5 to get there by minivan (or 40 minutes by foot).

Tip: Spend at least 1 full day (including an overnight stay) to properly appreciate the villages. Most day trippers and tours arrive after 10.30am and leave before sunset. We were here for 1.5 days and visited every village.

The Dong villages are a 30-minutes car ride from downtown Sanjiang. You can hail a taxi off the street to get there (¥60 flat fee) or locate a collective minivan (¥10 per person if the van is full or ¥50 per trip if you're the only ones).

Truely authentic minority village & lifestyle
Apr 2013 • Couples
Chengyang is in the north of Sanjiang. It is an autonomous 600yr old Dong village of12.5 square Km in the Guangxi province.
There are about 450 families which are in 8 villages each with their own wind and rain bridge the biggest being the Chengyang Yongji Wind and Rain Bridge.
There are numerous Drum towers and water wheels.
People are friendly and willing to engage.
Their cultural "show" is on at 10.30 every day and worthwhile seeing and hearing the traditional songs and dances whilst in Minority dress.
A very laid back place and in the hills so pack autumn/ spring clothes..... light cardigans and at least light weight jeans for April/May travel.
Lots of good walks.
A great place to just veg out and see how "the other half live".
Very scenic place whatever the season.

The Amazing Building: wind and rain bridge
Dec 2012 • Friends
Walking in Guangxi, in some ethnic minorities and residential area landscape tourist attractions can see beautiful wind and rain bridge. The whole bridge is covered with blue bricks ancient tile, mostly have 3-5 a big roof‘s type pavilion cover, and it can for the pedestrian to walk. It is said that some rain bridge is ages ago, build shelter bridge craftsman people didn't drawings, don't nail all with mortise and tenon joint connection which are more than 100 years history. "Visting Amazing Guangxi" group has been to here and enjoyed the wonderful trip in here.

A Trip Back in Time!
Oct 2012 • Friends
As an ethnografic researcher I had studied China's Dong minority people. However I was quite unprepared to witness their lifestyle first hand. Traveling to Sanjiang Dong Nationality Country was like entering a time machine and traveling to another era.

Do yourself favor and get off the beaten tourist path. Visit this area. Soak up the culture. See rice being sifted by hand and dried in elementary school playgrounds. Eat the hand ground glutinous rice balls sweetly flavored. For the stout in heart, try fish that was salted and preserved 20 years ago! Accommodations in the villages are simple and inexpensive. The Dong are warm and kind. Make the trip. You'll not be sorry! Ancient wind bridges and Dong towers await you. All made without a single nail!
