Boca lived up to my expectations. It is a small fishing village that has few tourists, or at least the day we were there. This is the hub for water taxis heading further south to places like Yelapa.
The only con is the trash, which seems to be a bit of a problem.

We drove to Boca de Tomatlan to catch a water taxi to Las Animas beach. The tour book described the beach as soft white sand and a very swim-able beach. The book written by Madeline Milne called “Puerto Vallarta” in 2020, said a water taxi would cost about $10.00 Cdn each return. The first fellow wanted 800 pesos which translated to $ 56 Cdn return. There was only one group of three men who were giving rides to Las Animas beach so The actual cost of the boat ride was $35.00 Cdn return for the two of us.
We decided to have lunch at the Coral restaurant. The food and service was acceptable. The beach however was large round pebbles, not soft white sand, and the waves were huge, only for an experienced swimmer. Wouldn’t you know it, there wasn’t a breeze to be had.
So all in all, it was a costly excursion for a few hours and a huge disappointment.
We could have stayed at our hotel in PV Old Town, on the beach where there’s a constant cool breeze on the soft white Sandy beach.

We found a crazy cool and fun hike from Boca to Las Animas, it was awesome!
Rated moderate.
First, we took an Uber from Hilton in PVR to Boca - $15US.
Second, from the bridge crossing the river and started the hike along the coast. It passed many beaches, houses, and out of business restaurants on the cliffs and shoreline. Also, several hidden resorts that are only reachable by boat.
Third, reached the beach in Las Animas in about 2 hours - this beach is incredible.
Finally, talked a boat taxi driver into driving back to PVR (Muertos Beach pier) for about $50US and on the way back got into a pod of whales and drove through one of the Los Acrhes - priceless.
If you want a crazy fun side trip in PVR try this!
We could have spent all day at the Las Animas beach!

This beach and it’s configuration changes yearly, depending on the rains. It is (2023) large soft sand and shallow water out quite far where the river converges.
There is many fishing pongas willing to take you anywhere you want to go. Fishing is available and the captains are very knowledgeable. There is a bait and tackle shop right in town for all of your fishing needs, BOCA BAIT & TACKLE. The owner “Neto’ has been located in Boca for over 20 years and can guide you towards a perfect setup for all your fishing needs.

Boca de Tomatlan is a quaint little town. It is not a major tourist destination; it's more of a locals beach. We went on a Sunday and the beach was packed with people watching a soccer match that was being played in the sand. The beach itself is small and split in half by a river. While we did not get in the water, it looked nice and clean with small waves. I loved the relaxed vibe here

Quiet, fishing town, providing access to coastal areas further south by water taxi (Yelapa, Quimixto, etc) or access north to Puerto Vallarta by road (bus, taxi auto). Stores for groceries, shoes, clothing, ice cream. Restaurants, although most close early (7 or 8 PM for food, 9 PM for drinks). Hiking trail for adventurous ones leaves from BdT Beach and heads south.

There are three things to know about Boca
1. it's very picturesque
2. it's a working, local fishing village
3. it's less a destination, more it's a staging post on the way
We decided to visit Boca and not go as far as Yelapa, saving that for another trip, another year. We took an Uber from PV. There are tourists, typically on the way to Yelapa, or the handful, more escapist staying locally. Watching all the boats making their way in and out of the river bay, navigating the extremely shallow and narrow passage, is fascinating. There is little to do, touristy, and that has its own appeal, and getting back from it is more difficult than imagined - boats returning from Yelapa do not stop here, they stop only on the way there, so you need to negotiate a taxi back.
But to my 2nd point above, what was the best for me was to watch a group of 3 kids, around 5 years old, playing on the beach on a swinging tire, like kids ought to. No phones, no electronics, it was wonderful to see kids being kids. And a few feet away, a man, wading into the ocean with a fishing net and casting it to fish, either for his family, or to sell, or both, but really, really old school, and all the more charming for it

I LOVED this beach. So unique and picturesque with the wide river flowing into the ocean. We did the hike to the next beach. Great hike but REALLY hot as there is no breeze in the jungle like area. A hard hike for those with knee issues as it is all up and down. We returned to Boca 2 more times - once to take the water taxi to Yelapa. So worth it!

We kayaked to this beach via our hotel Villa La La. Nice place to catch a bite to eat and a beer. The beach is not very big but comfortable and swimming is great. In a cove area so the waves are not real big.

Went to Las Animas beach yesterday via white /orange central bus from PV to Boca Tamatlan and then a panga to Las Animas. The water was so clear and the beach glittered with gold like specks. We had a wonderful time until 4pm. That is when I realized two mistakes had been made. 1. I let the hubby do the negotiations to get there 😆. 2. He paid the panga driver up front for a round trip. After having faith that PoYo from Yelapa would be back(SP is wrong I'm sure but that is how you pronounce his name) we finally gave up at 6pm and paid a second time for a panga to get back to Boca. What was really upsetting is that the beachfront restaurant that PoYo took us too knew what he was and IS doing to people. Alejandro the waiter even shook his hand and they exchanged a friendly convo. So...never pay round trip up front and please don't give this guy your business. After asking around at the restaurant and at Boca..those guys all know that PoYo does this a lot. Why let him do business when he makes the panga business from Boca look bad? I don't know but thankfully it was just a 12$ mistake and we learned a lesson. We will be making a complaint at the marina. Here is a pic of the boat number, thief and restaurant. We were apparently not the only "stupid gringos" he did this to yesterday. Another family was left stranded as well(came at a different time).

Hi how can you get to walmart from Boca De Romanian and also which beaches allow you to walk with your dog?

How many people will fit in water taxi? We are 14 and for what ive read, i will not buy private rides, and only pay for one way trip to jelapa and pay as we leave back. We are rentong a car. So should we drive to boca for the taxi instead of paying from pier at los muertos? Or rent a private from mismaloya?
Written April 5, 2019
The little water taxis only hold 6-8 people. You can book one way or set up return rides at Boca. We just booked one way trips and had no problems. The charge per person usually.

I’m wondering if the mini supers are good enough for groceries? It’s a long way to PV for groceries.

Not sure about bocca but found everything I needed at the tiny local grocery stores in yelapa) it's cheaper to buy in pvr abd take with you, but I like to support the local ppl

I would like to know which bus to Boca and how long it took fro PV
Written October 8, 2018
Take the orange bus from down town. 8 pesos 1 way. Goes to Bocca De Tomatlan where it stops and everyone gets off. Hike down the hill to the water taxis or beach bars. Reverse the process to get back to downtown PVR

Are you able to take a water taxi from Nuevo Vallarta or Puerto Vallarta? If so, does the water taxi go directly to Los Animas or do you need to take a water taxi from Boca to Los Animas? Thank you in advance!
