“Più su 2 miglia è Nesso, terra dove cade uno fiume con grande empito, per una grandissima fessura di monte. Queste gite son da fare nel mese di maggio” (Leonardo da Vinci, Codex Atlanticus). In English: “Two miles higher up there is Nesso, a place where a river falls with great violence into a vast rift in the mountain. These trips are to be made in the month of May.”

Nesso is a sleepy village, clinging to the hills that rise from the shoreline of Lago di Como about half way between Como and Bellagio. We made it our base for a week long visit to the lake.

It has the feeling of being mostly overlooked by the tourists that flock to Lago di Como’s better known gems. That (obviously) included us, as it was not until the last day of our stay - on a glorious, mid-May afternoon - that we took da Vinci’s advice, and set off to visit the Orrido di Nesso (Nesso ravine or gorge).

As the Orrido was formed by the confluence of two streams - the Tuf and Nosè, which tumble some 200 meters from the Val di Nosèe the into the lake - one of the best places to see it is one of Nesso’s other main attractions, the Ponte della Civera. Likely to be of Roman origin, the Ponte della Civera spans the gorge on Lago di Como’s shore.

The place we were staying was quite high up the hill, so we had a pleasant walk down through the village with great views up to the 15th century Castello di San Lorenzo, across village of Nesso itself and down to the lake. From the main road - the Strada Statale - it’s another 300 or so steps down to the shoreline and the Orrido. You then approach the Ponte della Civera and the Orrido through a covered stone walkway, with arched openings looking across to Brienno.

Standing on the Ponte, looking up at the gorge… who knows, but we may even have been standing in exactly the same spot where Leonardo da Vinci once stood. Frankly, the waterfall wasn’t all that impressive. However, that really didn’t matter - it was once admired by one of the best known artists in history, and we were following in his footsteps. And the Ponte and surrounding buildings are very picturesque.

Afterwards, we climbed back up through Nesso to the Chiesa Santi Pietro e Paolo (it was closed when were there), then back up to the Strada Statale where we stopped for an aperitivo on the terrace of the Locanda Tre Rose, overlooking the lake and watched the sun set. (Spritz con Aperol, anyone?)

A truly great afternoon…

Probably the only thing to see in Nesso, however we were staying here during our visit on Lake Como so every time we wanted to take the boat on the lake we had a chance to see this lovely bridge which is just next to Nesso's 'harbour'... You can also swimming around and under the bridge, people were jumping off the bridge in the lake! I would suggest to come by lake and not by foot from the village on top as it is a lot of stairs...!

Lovely place to see and have a swim , what everyone fails to mention is the over 100 steps that you need to take to go down, which is fine but when coming back up is a different story 😂 thought I’m in pretty good shape until this , it is a job 😂 but a good laugh 👍

Nesso is a peaceful and an authentic Italian village village between Como and Bellagio. You´ll get best view to the waterfall and the gorge when you´ll walk down to the lake front and stand on the old Roman bridge. The view is very impressive, especially after a rainy day.

Even if you won't stay in the beautiful village of Nesso, you should definetely make a stop there just to visit this point!.You will see a sign ''Orrido di Nesso''on the main road , and there you can watch the waterfall from the road flowing down into the sea. Then you will find a cobbled path with lots of steps ( 10 min.) that lead to the picturesque old bridge and some round amazing steps sinking in the lake !!!! You can sit there for hours absorbing the beauty and peace, especially at low season.....Apart from this spot there is not much to see in Nesso.....

Some info and directions :
This is #Nesso, a small village on the south side of #lakecomo A nice waterfall travels in to the lake under this old #romanbridge ( See the signs #orrido ) . If you rent a boat they travel under the bridge so you can see the waterfall. Parking is difficult but if you travel from Como, drive through the village until you see the parking Ferry Sign to the left. Form the parking there is a nice old path that leads you direct to the bridge. After visiting the bridge, there are stairs on the left and the right side (300 or so.. give you some nice exercise), get a nice coffee at the bar on the main street and walk back down. Guess an hour or so will be fine to visit this nice site. There is also a nice cafe that opens when the ferry is due to arrive. Great place to sit and enjoy views of Lake Como. Enjoy.
