Interesting and fascinating

One of the best-preserved fortresses of the First World War in Europe. Interesting tour and amazing landscape from the top of the fortress to the lakeview. His French guns are still fully functional. It seems to be in a place out of time and space.

Good surprise

Nice visit of the fort, especially for kids. Not worth going to colico just for that but if you are around worth spending the hour there. Good view from the top too. Be careful it’s only guided tours and they start at the hour, so arrive just a few min before to avoid waiting

Fantastic tour

I was fortunate to visit the fort today as The Alpni Mountain troops unveiled a monument commemorating the end of WW1. The staff at the fort were very helpful and spoke excellent English. Our tour was given by Carol? The tour was excellent very informative. I was enthralled throughout the tour. The fort is in great order. One of the guns was fired to mark the last post. Thank you to all the staff who made the visit so enjoyable.

Definitely worth a visit

Really interesting tour of this fascinating fort. You can get a combined ticket for this and the 17th century Fortress of Fuentes for 10Euro for adults and 6Euro for kids. The tours seem to run every 90 minutes - our guide was excellent. She gave a bilingual tour in English and Italian for the group. It was incredible to get so up close to where the men slept, worked and used the toilet! Including a chance to get right into the gun turret - it really made you appreciate the conditions, not to mention the heat, that these soldiers were experiencing.

It's a nice walk but there is parking close by if you don't feel like it. Bottles of water, toilet and coffee machine are the only facilities onsite.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. The tours starts every hour: 9,30am; 10,30 am, 11,30 am, 12,30 am. In the afternoon: 3, 4, 5, 6 the last tour. And for the facilities, unfortunatelly, we cannot sell anything more... Thank you!

fascinating WW1 artillery fort.
Aug 2018 • Family
This is fascinating WW1 artillery fort designed to protect Italy from Austrian or German invasion through the mountain passes. It is in pristine condition because it never came under attack. The guns still rotate and load. Very easy access. Train from Varenna takes 30 mins and costs 5 euros each return. Station is just 5 min walk from the Varenna ferry so easy from Bellagio and elsewhere. Great outing for boys, big and small!!

Interesting tour of of a well preserved WWI fort

Found this place by chance when searching through things to see whilst staying in Varenna. We combined the visit with a morning trip to the nearby 17th century Forte di Fuentes and you can buy a combined entry ticket for both which is very good value at €10 per adult.

Entry to Forte Montecchio Nord is by guided tour only which run hourly and last an hour. There is a half hour break from 1.30pm and so we did the 2pm tour. Sara our young Italian guide was excellent and very patient delivering the tour in both Italian and fluent English to a mixed nationality and aged group. The fort is incredibly well preserved as are the guns which still move and are obviously well cared for even now. The demonstration of how they were manoeuvred and fired was excellent as was the explanation of how the damp and humid conditions of a fort partly built into the rock was managed back in 1914. The fort was used by Italian and German troops in WWII although this wasn’t really expanded upon! The tour is rounded off by climbing to the roof to view the four gun and observation turrets against the breathtaking surroundings of Lake Como and the alps beyond with some good photo opportunities.

You don’t have to be into military history as I am to find this place fascinating and it would be well worth adding it to your itinerary for something a bit different when staying in the Lake Como area.

feel the history

During a periodic commemoration of Second World War times you can appreciate all the charm of this place. This was a defense bastion never reached by the conflict, due to the position near Swiss. You'll join the mystery of this place being in the gun control tower. Visit it.

So you have to plan this one, there are only certain days it is open. There are tours only, these can be done in English, they are informative but it doesn't contextualise the fort in terms of its role historically or within the landscape, so reading round is a must. Certainly worth a visit if you are a military buff.

Thank you for your review but we think that the fortress is interesting also for the wonderful panorama and for the way of life of the soldiers in WW1 that we show. And yes... It worth a visit not only for t the military buff, we hope...

Beautiful views from the top! Worth a visit for an hour or two. Bit of an unsteady path for young children and costs approx 10 euro per adult but otherwise a nice thing to do.
