About
The Lombardy Region officially recognised the Nature Reserve of Manerba del Garda ("Della Rocca, del Sasso e Parco Lacuale") with a regional resolution in April 2016. The park covers a territory of approximately 1,160,000 m2 (include meadows, woodland, trails, vineyards and olive groves), as well as 850,000 m2 of the lake itself. The Reserve was established to preserve and promote the ecosystem and landscape, historical and archeological sites, as well as to support such activities as education and understanding, preservation and divulgation of a unique environment, remarkable for both its history and biodiversity. The Valtenesi Archeological Museum within the Reserve is the information centre for visitor who wish to understand why throughout history humans have chosen to settle in this spectacular setting. The Reserve is always open to the public.

One of the most beautiful places on the lake. I suggest going on a clear day. Be wary the trail decent from the cross—it’s steep, and if you go back that way the trail is rated “expert” but takes 20/30 min or so down to the water. Other trails in the park allow you spend hours on the terrain.

We found this place in a local tourist brochure, it wasn’t included in our Rough Guide. We were so glad to have found it. It is on the top of a hill looking straight at the first row of Alps and right down the northern end of Lake Garda. You are up high and feel like you are right in the view. There are also stunning views of the beaches and islands below.
The rocca is a ruin but these make good climbing fun for the kids.
The walk from the car park to the top takes five to ten minutes but the local tourist centre promotes walks around the base of the hill which are up to 6km long.
We went in the recent hot spell and it was 36 degrees so take a hat and some water. (As kiwis used to living in a place with harsh sun we were amazed we were the only ones wearing hats!) There is also a handy cafe back at the car park which has ice blocks and cool drinks which came in very handy!
The building was marked Museum but we concluded that this wasn’t open or had closed.
In all, this place is spectacular and we were so glad we went. Definitely the most stunning view of our trip and even better because it is a little hard to find on windy roads and this seemed to have deterred the hordes on the lidos below!

A little bit difficult to find but worth it when you do so . There is free parking plus a cafe and a museum just before you get to the climb up to the ancient castle .There are archeological findings going back 5000 to 8000 years WOW ! These were found relatively recently in the 1970's . Great views of the lake & in particular San Felice & Isola del Garda from the top.

Undoubtedly one of the symbols of Lake Garda, the ruins of this fortress stand on top of the citadel of Manerba, easily accessible along a short uphill stretch.
This fortress stands on a rocky promontory, from which the wide panorama of the lake unravels, and sinks its origins since prehistoric times, of which we have knowledge from the finds.
History then has it that it was passed into the hands of Celts, Etruscans and Romans and then acquired in the centuries to come by the Scaligeri until the Republic of Venice, which decreed the end by destroying it, since it became a hideout of outlaws.
To date, following a series of restorations, the traces of the main rooms remain visible and a little lower, descending for a short slope, those of the small Church of St. Nicholas.
On the top is installed a cross, clearly visible even from below, in memory of the legend linked to this place, according to which it is said that a terrible wolf had made his lair up there. Of the three young men chosen for the enterprise, only one prevailed and the inhabitants of Manerba raised a cross in his honor, while the other two turned into rocks.
At the foot of the dirt climb, where a parking lot has been built, there is the Archaeological Civic Museum of Valtenesi, where all the finds found in the territory are enclosed, starting from the oldest prehistoric ones.

To find the Rocca di Manerba a navigator can help you much. The streets to this point are very small (some are one-way). Next to the Museum is parking space. From there you walk up a hardened steep road for 600m (only with wheelchair if you have push aid, or motor aid), to the ruins of a medieval castle. Here are a few signs with information. After another 200m wooden staircase you can enjoy a wonderful view on Garda Lake (on a clear day!) at 800m above sea level. Some bike up this hill.
We did not visit the museum, it seems to have one exhibition room. Next to it is a small restaurant for a drink and a small lunch (but it took some time before our order was delivered). Museum and terrace are accessible with wheelchair.
(In the afternoon we went down the road to the beach with Sup Garda).

It's an interesting archeological sites and it's free the visit. From the Rock the landscape is excellent but you must remember that you can enjoy it more in a clear and limpid day. Before the visit of the rock it’s better to see the Museum (the entrance is free) so you can appreciate more the visit of the ruins.

The most beautiful 360 degree view of Lake Garda and surrounding area. Worth the drive or hike. Enjoy a refreshing drink or gelato when you come back down.

Amazing views and well worth the trek up the hill. There’s a car park half way up for those driving. There’s also a bar and museum, can’t comment on that as it was closed on the day we went up and is every Tuesday. Useful history and stories in Italian,German and English at various stages. Amazing views. They will take your breath away.

One of a kind panoramic and scenery viewpoint
After a challenging but bearable walk your eyes get overwhelmed by the beauty of Garda lake panorama

Is it possible to walk to the ruins from the ferry drop off point?
Written August 14, 2019
Bonjour,

Hi.
How hard is the climbing to the view point? can be too hard for kids?
Is there a recommended parking place near?
Thanks,
Amir.
Written August 14, 2017
Hello,
Not too hard. Depending on the age of the kids, their condition and the weather. We have seen kids walking up from age of 9 years. Just don't hurry. Half of the road is hardened, part is stairs, part is ruins.
Follow the small road to the Museum, there is parking space.
Enjoy!
