About

While the masses go all the way up to the Rigi, in-the-know people come here to the Seebodenalp. It can be reached by a quite narrow but two-way road from Küssnacht. If you don't have a car, or if the thought of steep inclines coupled with narrow roads and infrequent passing places give you an anxiety attack, then there remains the choice of taking a comfortable, brand-new (due to go into service in July 2018) aerial cable car from Küssnacht to the Alp. As a final and least scary but most strenuous alternative, you can always walk up if you don't mind a climb of some 600 meters. Once up there, the plateau opens up, ideal for short walks or more serious hiking, providing spectacular views over Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus, the chain of the Alpine Mountains as well as the Central and North-Western part of Switzerland right to the German and French borders. There is also a restaurant right at the end of the aerial cable car and more further back on the plateau. We came up here once when the lake and the low-lands were covered in fog (Sea of Fog/Nebelmeer in German) but the alp was in sunshine: fantastic view over the clouds with the alpine chain, Mount Pilatus and a few other hills just peaking out of the fog. A great place to visit!

Hiking in Rigi is very popular and that's what makes it very touristic. Seebodenalp however is the way to feel nature far from crowds and with an amazing view on Luzern from top. If you have a car, it is much cheaper to get there since the only thing that you need to pay in the parking spot and not the expensive railways. Strongly recommended for nature lovers and adventure seekers!

This is a place mostly known to the locals. It is accessible on foot, car or cable car. At 1000 meters high you dominate the lake and the Swiss plateau. Plenty to do here. In winter skiing and sledging are very popular, in Summer hiking while enjoying the beautiful views. Along the hiking trail you will also find barbecue areas you can freely use (wood provided) and while having diner you can enjoy the sunset.
