Well preserved WWI German Bunkers

These bunkers are located about five miles southwest of Varennes-en-Argonne on an unnamed road. There are three bunkers connected by remnants of trenches. There is a nice bunker that the commanding officer stayed, a headquarters bunker and a communication bunker. They are built of concrete and are thick walled. Once this area was captured, the American demolition crews wanted to practice so they set large charges, but had no success, and the only result was to blow a hole in the ground next to the bunker. At the communication bunker this is where runners were dispatched, and where telephone service was somewhat established. Radio was not in much use yet. This area is fairly wooded and you must be careful with the terrain when you are walking. This area is where the American 77th division fought.
