    Beautiful castle
Castle very well ⁇ ined and cared for. Not suitable for people with reduced mobility. Car access has little information about the path to follow. I advise to leave the car in the nearby village and go on foot.

Like old castles? Like to know more about one of Portugal’s founding fathers, St Nuno? Like to work up a sweat hiking to the top of a small mountain? Like photo-worthy, sweeping vistas? A visit to this place combines all of that. Well worth 2-3 hours of your time for a visit.

    Beautiful and well-preserved Castle!
A very well preserved fortification, where we made a guided tour with a friendly and helpful guide, who gave us various information and even advised us an excellent restaurant for lunch! If you want to go on foot and have difficulty climbing stairs, make the way that passes through the Largo do Pelourinho and the Antiga Cadeia... it costs less, there is much more to see and stay right at the main entrance of the Castle, next to a tunnel that leads us to the interior and to the ticket shop! You can also take this same road by car and park near the Castle. Its interior is impeccable and worth a visit and see the cistern and the tower that also served as a cage! Walk through the entire space and enjoy the Terreiro de Santiago, with the statue of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and all the views you get from the place!

The first historical records date the initial construction to the 12th century, at the behest of D. Teresa, mother of D. Afonso Henriques. It suffered strong shocks in the 1755 earthquake. It was also partially destroyed in 1810, during the French invasions. The requalification works that began in 1940 went through several stages, until the present day, adding new architectural and functional pieces that even allowed the creation of the museum in the so-called Paço de Ourem.

Today, the building is well maintained and clean in its external area (grade 4). A statue of Constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira stands out, in the so-called Terreiro de Santiago, on the north side of the Castle.

The operation of visiting the museum and guided tours is the weak point of the castle (grade 2) as it is very limited in terms of opening hours and staff, which ends up limiting visits to external areas. Therefore, in our case, it was not possible to learn more about the facilities, their characteristics and history. Here, the suggestion is to find out about timetables and reservations by consulting the Ourém City Council, by telephone (+351) 249 540 900 or on the tourism website. ourem . PT.

For those traveling by car, there are spaces available at the entrance to the Castle. Pre-programming your GPS or smartphone app with the exact parking location can also be interesting. From there it is possible to reach Vila Histórica by car, just below (at the fork, take the street on the right).

We visited the castle of Ourém on the same day that we have visited the castle of Torres Novas. The Ourém castle who is located in the Medieval town of Ourém, on the top of the hill is one of the most innovative works of military architecture of the century. XV in Portugal. Built by Conde de Ourém, grandson of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the castle has a compact structure with modern active defense systems, including two large pentagonal towers that act as bastions and offered greater resistance to bombing.
But onfortunatly is was also not open for public due to renovation works, nothing of that was mentioned on the website and also the Tourist information bureau was closed due to the Covid pandemic.

The Ourém castle was renovated and restored. Parts of the castle are now accessible and other areas were made safer with guide rails and a cat walk. A guided tour of the castle is also available. Highly recommend this side trip from nearby Fatima.

From a distance and even close up it looks rather new to be a medieval building, Actually new or an overdone restoration I’m not sure as it was impossible to get too close. The roads to the structure are blocked with barriers. The graveyard next door on top of the hill seemed in use but no access to enter the structure.

The castle is closed, but I would definitely still visit Ourem. It is a quiet, charming medieval town with spectacular views. I saw probably 20 total people - and walked the entire town.

You can still see some of the exterior of the castle (currently being restored) if you walk to it using Rua de Sao Jose. If you try to see it the other way your GPS may take you, the path up to it is completely blocked & you can't see the castle from this way (at least that's how it was in July, 2020).

This castle, which was almost in ruins, was restored magnificently at the beginning of the 20th century. It played a big role in the history of the region. At reception, a person spoke French and explained to us the main features of its history, which was fascinating. But just for the building itself and the view, you have to go up this hill.

Ourem is a 12th century castle with a palace added in the 15th century.
The view is fantastic with the town at the foot of the hill.
The castle is undergoing a 2 year restoration project at the moment, but definitely worth a visit.

We stayed one night in Ourem historic hilltop village in off-season. The old town is lovely with a couple of cafes and a pousada. The drive up is steep and narrow but totally manageable and typical of many places in Europe. From the town, it is a short walk up to the castle site, or you can drive all the way up to the castle ruins where there is a lot of parking. It is a large site with great views all around. The main castle interior was closed (not sure if they open it up in high season) but you can roam around most of it and get in the outer sections. For families, though, be aware that there are no railings and many places you can get to with unprotected drop-offs where a fall would be fatal. For example we wandered down a dark passageway which ended in an open doorway out the wall with a 20 foot drop (where an archway apparently used to be). So, if you have younger kids, be very, very vigilant or don't go.

Castle is a bit upper Ourem. Difficult to climb(cherry licour) bar ! All keeping the old and original decoration. Very nice to visit and spend some hours.... relaxing , imagining the life in there and... enjoying the view all around.

If you go to Ourem you should visit the castle of course.

Leaving Tomar in the direction of Fátima, we were, all of a sudden, in front of the amazing "Castelo de Ourém". Impressive walls impregnated of history! Archaeological findings confirm the Ourém region to be inhabited since pre-historical times. Along the centuries, romans, visigoths and moors have established themselves in the region! The first official records of the Castle date from the 12th century. Its architecture has caractheristics of many different styles - arab, venetian, florentine, romanesque, gothic and baroque - just like a puzzle! What makes it much more interesting! The Castle had its golden period in the 15th century, when Ourém was a rich a productive region. After it, it suffered a great deal from earthquakes to napoleonic wars. Due to recent renovation efforts, the "Castelo de Ourém" is in quite good conditions and visiting its ramparts, towers and inner spaces is quite easy and pleasant. Enjoy!
