The Plaskerk in Raalte stems from the 1100s and has been through renovations on a number of occasions. The interior decoration is rather simple and toned down, although the bow like ceiling elements are nice. The outside of the building is an eclectic mix of stones of different sizes and colors. Not the most beautiful church in town. But worth a visit to explore and experience nevertheless.

On the site of the current reformed Plaskerk of Raalte, there was already a stone church building in the 12th century (!), a naturally Catholic church in Romanesque architectural style, dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This church building consisted of a tower, nave and choir, all of a considerably smaller size than the current church. The former Romanesque choir was replaced in 1425 by the current three-sided closed choir in late Gothic style. At the end of the 15th century, the Romanesque nave was also replaced. by a wider nave in Gothic style. The old tower, from the 12th century, collapsed in 1694, the current tower dates from 1697. In 1835 the church exterior was plastered... fortunately this layer of plaster was removed during a restoration in 1970. During this restoration in the 1970s, the church tower was raised, and the tent roof of the tower probably also dates from that period. The consistory room was built in the 1970s, of course in late Gothic style.
So many renovations in the very long history of this church. The result is an attractive-looking single-aisled church in late Gothic style, relatively short tower with tent roof, short nave with a large, lower choir. The church would not have passed into Protestant hands until after the Reformation, probably not until the end of the 17th century or even later. Because Raalte is a traditional Catholic community, as evidenced by the enormous new Catholic church built at the end of the 19th century, dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The Plaskerk is a beautiful church, worth a visit to Raalte. In the church there is still some early 18th century furniture, such as a pulpit and men's pews.
