About
In the late 1950's, Mario Sambuco founded the Sambuco company. His goal is to conserve and protect this tradition by producing pieces in a wide variety of shapes and decorations, inspired by models and designs from Deruta's historic ceramic-making tradition. He also wanted his pieces to express a sense of modernity, to reflect contemporary tastes. Sambuco Ceramiche developped its own project called 'Discover the fascinating art of ceramics' with the goal to valorize and promote the ancient tradition of handmade pottery in Deruta. The staff of Sambuco Mario organize guided visits to its workshop offering an extensive description of all phases of the manufacture of pottery, from the creation of models to the exit of the artistic ceramics from the kiln. Also, we organise ceramic and fresco courses for tourists at the Sambuco workshop, customized by number of participants, duration, etc.

OK, short story. We spent waaaay too much money in this store. There is so much to look at that we were easily lost in the rows and shelves of gorgeous ceramics of all types. We were the only patrons in the store at the time so it was fun to have the place to ourselves. Once we decided what to buy, they deftly arranged to have everything shipped to our home in the U.S. Then we were treated to a private tour of the factory. We never even made it to another factory that day.

My fiance and I were tired and grumpy about yet another activity at the end of a long day. Once inside though we quickly forgot as we were entranced with the pottery process being demonstrated, with the quality of the hand painted pottery, and in the end bought an exquisite unique stand with bowls and pitcher for washing hands, and a fresco. The friend we gave the stand to was blown away, and we love our fresco.
This place is definitely worth the visit! :)

Sambuco has a great variety of products, and will apply their designs to fit any piece of pottery they make. They did a great job of answering our questions and making the shipping process simple. Can't wait to receive our order. They are quite organized and businesslike but also welcoming -- not so at all the shops we visited.

I have not visited as yet, but am delighted to have won two beautiful espresso cups in a Great British Chefs competition. I would certainly like to visit some time in the future, but for now am just enjoying these really wonderful pieces.
