Small Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Bagni, the story goes that a merchant having found a painted image of the Madonna,
He placed an oak tree on it and asked for Grace for his sick wife. The wife recovered and the news spread, all the people went to pray near the oak, today in this small sanctuary you can see not only the image of the Madonna with the little child, but also part of what remains of the oak, since that people who went to ask for a favor often also removed a small piece of bark. Inside the sanctuary the votive panels of the graces received are also visible, furthermore it is possible to purchase some religious objects next to the sanctuary.

Well worth a visit 😊 The sanctuary has over 800 ceramic tiles on the walls. Some are simple, some include a long message. They all give thanks for the grace received (PGR)
I used Google translate to read the longer messages. I found it to be such a peaceful, inspiring experience. This is an incredible display of gratitude for miracles of protection through terrible events such as car crashes, earthquakes, ceilings collapsing and even war. An outpouring of love of a community that I have not seen in visits anywhere else!

We came upon this church by accident a few years ago. When we returned to Umbria this year we visited again. It is a very small church filled with "plaques of thanksgiving" to the Madonna for answering prayers for healing in times of sickness or accidents. Each plaque is unique to the person's circumstance. Some date back to the 1700's.

This history of this chapel, displaying 400 years of tiles handmade in nearby Deruta, tells a story of human trials and prayers answered while tracing the artistic development of ceramic art in the area. As churches go, it's small and simple, but the unique artwork is kind of interesting if you're a ceramics fan.

I went to visit this Santuario the last day before our departure, though it was only 1km from the Casale where we slept. The church was nice, and the most interesting are the ceramic tiles, not only beautiful to see, but record every single historical fact of individual person or family - it would worth a whold day to read them.

We passed the sign for this Church every time we turned in via Casalina but this year we visited the Church which is the most unique church we have ever seen. What all the other reviewers have said is true, it is a very special place of thanksgiving, and the handpainted ceramic plaques all told their own stories.

Sanctuario Madonna del Bagno is a unique place and well worth a visit. We arrived mid morning and spent a fascinating hour or so looking at the hundreds of tiles, many dating back to the 1600's. Such a peaceful place too, we were the only visitors at that time. Depending on which direction you're travelling, exit the E45 at either Casalina or Deruta Sud and follow the signs. The Sanctuary is roughly half way between the sender exits.

This is a very happy peaceful place. The whole church is hung with thousands of hand painted tiles, made in nearby Deruta, depicting an accident, a fall from an olive tree, illness difficult childbirth, all sorts of falls from horses etc.the miracles are, that after hanging their tile, all of these unfortunates recovered. There are literally thousands in the church, some from the sixteenth century right up through world wars 1 and 2 and more recently. It's totally fascinating to read these mini tragedies, but they turn out well. There is a tree in the church where the original tile was hung by a husband who's wife was dying in childbirth. When he returned home, mother and child were doin well. From then on pilgrims came from all over Italy to hang tiles for loved ones.
Even if you are not very religious, this is a lovely peaceful place to stop and smell the roses.
It on the E45 superstar fa, exit Casalina, then follow the signs. I hope you enjoy it.

We walked to the church from Collepepe, but you could get the bus to Casalina & walk from there.
It is a beautiful & fascinating church with many intriguing ceramic tiles on the interior. Each tile tells it's own story - it's well worth your time looking at them.
Check the opening hours before you set off to make sure it's open.
