About
The Quiet Man Museum is a must for Quiet Man enthusiasts. Guided walking and chauffeur tours of The Quiet Man film locations depart daily from The Quiet Man Museum. The tours bring film buffs to the original film locations and visitors hear what the film stars were like, how they interacted with the locals and what happened when Hollywood took over the sleepy village of Cong in 1951. The Quiet Man Museum is an exact replica of the exterior of White O’Morn, the ancestral cottage bought by Sean Thornton on his return to Ireland, as the original White O’Morn cottage is unfortunately now in ruin. The Museum is also an exact replica of the White O’Morn interior, which was a Hollywood set. The Quiet Man Museum is transformed into a cinema in the evenings for intimate screenings of The Quiet Man on a large screen, and screenings of a fantastic documentary called John Ford: Dreaming The Quiet Man featuring Maureen O'Hara. The Quiet Man Museum is open from 1 April to 31 October annually.

I must say this is a delightful little museum. It recreates the house from 'The Quiet Man' filmed in Cong in the summer of 1951. However, interior scenes were shot in the USA so this beautiful little cottage is a recreation of the set. Full of curios and memorabilia from the film and there's monitor showing all the places in the Cong area where the film was shot.
It's gorgeous in there, a step back in time.

You first take the stairs to the upper floor where you can visit the gift shop as well as buy your museum tickets. Then you are escorted back downstairs and let into the cottage. It's fun to see the contents of the cottage and watch the video they show. You will spend less than an hour here in total.

For our trip to Ireland, we decided to begin our stay at the Lodge at Ashford Castle. While looking for things to do in the area, and being a fan of the movie, I was excited to find the Quiet Man Museum and was delighted to find that we could book a private tour. I contacted Lisa and we easily made the arrangements by email for the 4-hour tour on the Monday of our stay.

She came to pick us up at the Lodge on a sunny bright morning in a beautiful and roomy Mercedes and we were off.

Lisa is an amazing tour guide and a wonderful storyteller! She was a font of information about the movie, and the filming in Cong and the surrounding counties, and she had wonderful behind-the-scenes stories to tell about the local families--including her own, that were involved in the filming.

Even if you are not familiar with the film (in which case you should go watch it right now!) you will enjoy this tour. Lisa's knowledge of the film is probably pretty unprecedented but she was equally happy to point out other areas of interest, recommend local restaurants, and answer our questions about all things Irish. The time just flew by as she ferried us around the picturesque village of Cong and out to the Connemara Mountains

The area is so beautiful--it is a truly pristine country that they work hard to keep that way, and there were so many beautiful sights to see from Cong Abbey to the Castle, and the farms along the Connemara valley.

Do yourself the favor and book a tour with the charming and entertaining Lisa when you visit the area. We felt it was the best part of our trip!

For those who know every line of the movie and their spouses who love them this was a great peak at the locations for The Quiet Man. Congo is a beautiful little town and you can certainly see how it would be ideal for 1950’s Ireland. Martine was a wonderful tour guide. She gave you great insights and had behind the scenes bits of knowledge. A wonderful 45 minutes. The next time I watch the movie it will bring back special memories of our Ireland adventure.

The museum itself was cute, but the tours are what the lover of the movie will want. The walking tour would cover most of the scenes. However, my wife loves the movie so much she wanted to see everything possible. We took Option E, which included everything. Lisa took us in her Mercedes on this all day tour. Some of the scenes were filmed quite some distances apart, so be prepared for a long ride at times. However, the scenery is beautiful and, most important, Lisa is fantastic. Her knowledge of every detail of the movie, its cast and the locations is phenomenal. Her father started the business and still does tours, so she grew up in the business. She conducted her first tour at 12 years old and left a job as an attorney to do this full time, so you can be assured she is knowledgeable and loves what she is doing. She is also very well spoken and can quote large blocks of dialogue word for word. Hearing her do the Irish that Maureen O'Hara spoke to Ward Bond and then translating for us was great. Since you can chose a tour according to your interest level, time available and budget, it is very flexible.

On September 12, we were staying at the Ashford Castle and wanted to get a tour of the area and hear about the quiet man movie. An arrangement was made for Lisa to give us a 90 minute chauffeured tour at 9:00. She was prompt and ready to make our tour fantastic. The energy and ability to quote lines from the movie verbatim was impressive and her accent was just the addition that made us enjoy the talks that much more. With the first movement of the car, Lisa took us back to the time the movie was made. Her knowledge of the movie and the stories of what occurred while the movie was being shot was a highlight of the tour. Lisa is simply amazing. We are so glad that we were able to do a tour with Lisa.

The village of Cong offers punters the rare opportunity to delve into the past and relive scenes from John Ford's classic film, The Quiet Man. The one exception to a blissful experience would be the so-called Quiet Man museum. Tourists are gouged even before entering this gift shop. Each person needs to pay a fee for the opportunity to potentially purchase items from this gift shop. Imagine if shoppers had to pay a fee prior to entering a Dunnes Store. Consumers would become irate and seek alternatives that were more economically enticing. Kindly learn from the mistakes of others. Several years back, a smart man wrote a book on traditional Irish pubs entitled A Pint of Plain. Within this book, the author attempted to warn readers from making the same mistake as himself. Lured to the village of Cong by its relationship to the Quiet Man, the author paid a fee to enter the so-called Quiet Man museum. He left the overpriced gift shop a bit hollow inside, dealing with utter remorse and disappointment. When sojourning to Cong, enjoy reliving scenes from The Quiet Man by avoiding this dodgy gift shop. Your woman inside, although belonging to the female species, passes as the quintessential gombeen man.

I've always enjoyed the bit of Blarney that is The Quiet Man, but I would have passed on this if not for another member of our group, who counts this movie as one of his all time favorites. Passing on the guided tour, we checked out the reproduction cottage, which while containing almost none of the original material from the film, made for a pleasant facsimile. With clothes available for dressing up as a Sean Thornton or Mary Kate Danaher, and cute displays, the museum captures "White of Morn" pretty well. Whether it's worth the money is entirely subjective, I know I didn't mind having a bit of goofy touristy fun, but I can't say it's a must see.
