The Museum next to to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the high grace (Nuestra senora de la Altagracia) is a very nice way to spend an hour. It houses interesting artifacts and costumes as well as a description on traditional and folkloric religious themes and rites related to the devotion of the High Grace Virgin, Patron of the province.

The Spanish settlers brought to the island of Hispaniola their Catholic faith. Through the years the devotion to the Virgin Mary grew and developed in the eastern region city of Higuey, the current home of the country’s “Basilica of the Virgin of La Altagracia.” Through the years the Basilica has turned into an icon of Roman Catholic culture. The city of Higuey, situated 40 minutes from Punta Cana, is a must destination for anyone interested in learning more about the religious history of the Dominican Republic. This small museum dedicated to the Virgin will take the visitor through the world of Dominican religious beliefs. The museum has different exhibitions such as the hall of medallions, treasure room and hall of the basilica to name a few. This museum was very impressive

It is very small museum. If you have time, you can visit and see, but It is Ok to skip this museum and go directly to Basilica.

Small but nice museum next to the famous La Basilica de la Altagracia. If you have some free time during your visit to the Basilica you can take a look on their exposition.

My husband and I walked over to the Museum after visiting the Basilica of our Lady of Altagracia next door. It cost about $10 to enter the museum. It may have useful to visit the museum beforehand, particularly if, like me, you did not grow up with much exposure to Catholicism. The tour only included us (and the guide and a security person). It was supposed to start with a short video, but the projector was not working that day. Our guide spoke English well, but it helped that my husband (who is fluent in Spanish) was also able to communicate/ask questions in Spanish, too. The guide provided a great deal of general information about Catholicism and the Lady of Altagracia specifically. Very informative and worth the short trip over from Punta Cana. The bathrooms were clean and stocked with tissue and paper towels.
