Never seen a cathedral so massively build of concrete. From the outside it looks between a post-modern factory and a silo. When you enter from the main entrance, the inside is truly impressive. It feels like a huge cave and the colored windows create an interesting light effect. Apparently it has been visited twice by the Pope.

Fantastic architecture! Worth the time to see such an incredible building. Free entrance. Surrounding area a good way to get a great feeling of the true Dominican way of life. Great humble people with a very serious demeanor. Also the best way to buy original Cuban cigars at 40% of hotel prices.

We did a road trip from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo and we decided to stop in Higuey to see the Basilica, it was a good decision. Whether you are a religious person or not you will get a warm feeling walking inside this amazing cathedral. The arch on top draws you into the building and once you are inside... More

This Basilica Cathedral was visited twice by Pope John Paul II and he declared it a Basilica. It is a must see if you visit the Punta Cana area. Have the tour guide Luis show you around. Architectural details include bronze carved doors, caoba wood, stained glass windows on all sides, and an amazing design created by 2 architects. You... More

We took a taxi ride from Punta Cana to Higuey and this was one of the stops. Interesting 20th Century Architecture with thousands of palms trees surrounding the Basilica. We were not aware of the dress code to enter the facility, so all we could do is look from the door. They did offer a wrap for the women and... More

This is a must do if you are visiting the east part of the country. Located in Higuey city, the Basilica is the center of the town, and amazing architectural artwork, you can visit does not matter if you are christian or not. It is place that makes you feel closer to God.

This is an amazing place to visit! I came to this town to visit a friend. This was seen from miles away and just gorgeous to see up close and personal. I highly recommend this to anyone who cares about culture, Christianity, or architecture in general! This is a MUST SEE!

Worth visiting. A very interesting cathedral. Tour guide outside will approach you and take you on a tour, then expect money at the end (approx $5 per person). Not sure if you are allowed inside without a guide? Our guide was very informative and took pics of us with our phone also!
