Once you have seen the [ho hum] tourist basilica, walk the six to eight minutes through a safe local neighborhood to one of the [if not "the"] oldest churches in North America. This little jewel sits at the edge of a small shaded park where you are sure to see locals sitting and kids chasing the pigeons. The place may be closed - because the government [will wonders never cease] is investing to restore the church. This is definitely worth a stop in an otherwise vanilla city. It is a very easy walk from the Basilica - which also is easy to find. Yu can read about the place with your smart phone - or - pay a guide service. It's only money.

Spectacular woodwork and tiles. gentleman outside who runs the souvenir stand outside provided a wonderful tour on the history of the church. Worth the visit if you are in Higuey.

This church is old and another stop on a great excursion but there didn't seem to be anyone working there that could give us some back ground on it. We know it is very very old and that's clear when you go inside, but I would love to know more.

Visited the larger cathedral in Higuey as part of a day excursion from hotel in Punta Cana. After the cathedral visit, we went to the San Dionisio (Saint Denis) Church for a stop. The church built in 1512 is a nice simple compliment to the cathedral. In-front of the church is a small city park. The church is small but simple. If in Higuey, would recommend a small stop for a visit.
