This is a must see in Asturias! We took an Alsa bus up to the lakes. Starting the end of May through mid October, there are restrictions and the only way to get to the very top is to take a bus. We hopped on the bus at the bus station in Cangas de Onis. We paid 9 euros for a round trip. Busses leave every 30 mins to the lakes and you can return back on any of the Asla busses. From the bus drop off you can hike up to the lakes or take a taxi for 2 euros. The hike is totally worth it. Be sure to wear layers as the climate is subject to change. If you plan to walk to the lakes, be sure to wear proper shoes. Some areas can be slippery and muddy.

If you are driving and it’s somewhere around high season, get there early morning. You will be able to drive all the way up and catch the sunrise. The lakes themselves are ok but the views around them are beautiful. Enjoy

Featured on the Vuelta this is a must do climb for serious cyclists. From the gate of the National park (free for bikes). It’s a gruelling 11.5km tour.

Mind the coaches, they “own” the road. They are not sympathetic to sore, wobbly legs! The middle section is awful! You will see a sign on the right hand side saying 15% - believe it!
This section is beyond tough. The cows are quite happy to watch you as they stand in the middle of the road!

After this section there is a Mirador del Reine - I stopped here and was glad. The views are stunning and it’s a good photo opportunity , as well as break! You won’t want to stop on the descent so make all your photo stops on the way up.

After the mirador it gets a little easier, there is a lovely downhill section which is nice but on the way back it’s murder!!

Finally you will drop down to lake enol. Stunning!!!!! This is where the coach car park is. Continue up the road and it will bring you behind the mound to the second lake, another car park and restaurant.

It is busy but I got take away drinks and icecream so didn’t have to que.

Over all, it is a super tough cycle, not for the faint hearted. However the top is picture perfect, a little slice of heaven even!?

The views at the Lakes are awsome. We travelled to the lakes by bus from Cangas de Onis. The bus service leaves regularly from the bus station in Cangas. There is walking for everyone, from those who just want a stroll to the more serious hikers. The routes are well marked. It is advisable to take some water and a snack with you: there is no cafe up at the lakes. We are in our 80s and whiled away a fabulous couple of hours strolling by the lakes on a lovely sunny day. The cow bells tinkled throughout: it was magic.

Driving up is beautiful especially when you’re in the passenger seat! So many possibilities for walks when you get there. Lovely to see the cattle roaming around eating the fresh grass in the sunshine. As always gorgeous scenery, never get bored of coming here. Peaceful. Children loved it too and enjoyed some bird watching. Saw Egyptian vultures and plenty of Goshawks.

Only authorised vehicles are allowed to enter the park after 8.30 am, so catch the bus from Cangas de Oñís. It costs about €9 for the day and stops at the church and then at the lakes. There is a short walking route on a paved track and a longer walking route around both lakes. Be careful not to go the wrong way, we did and ended up on a different route, meaning we walked for four and a half hours instead of three and a half hours! It is a medium difficulty walk that involves some rocky mountain path. There are plenty of beautiful views to enjoy. Wear proper boots or trainers, take water with you.

Took the 10 euro taxi tour from the village up the mountain to the lakes, around 1 1/2 hours. Wonderful vistas and superb mountain air

During our stay in the Picos this was the tour I was most looking forward to, but which was the biggest deception at the same time.

In high season you cannot drive entirely to the Covadonga lakes, you have to leave your car in one of the 4 official parkings and take the public bus from there. Obviously, most people drive as high up as possible and leave the car at Parking 4. This also means a long queue plus, since the bus comes from further away, there is no guarantee you have a seat right away. That was the first mistake - leaving the car further down would have been a far better option.

The bus ride was ok. Upon arriving to the lakes we were confronted with the hundreds of people that were there. Whichever hike you are choosing, you are walking with crowds. Luckily, many visitors decided to picnic at Lake Ericina, so the more we moved away, the less people we saw. But still, compared to other hikes we did in the Picos (Cosgaya, Brez, La Molina, Minas de Altaiz, Sotres) this was the most touristic experience.

Other than that, scenery is nice, but nothing special compared to other Picos destinations.

You have quite some hiking options if you are looking for an easy stroll:

Option 1: pass by Ercina lake till Invernales de La Redondiella, then back via Belbín (7,4km, 100m elevation diff.)

Option 2: Mirador del Rey and back (7km)

Option 3: walk between the lakes. This is what we went for. We started at Mirador Entrelagos, then lake Ercina and climbing up the rocks. We had a picnic there. Then on through a Jurassic park-like scenery and finally back via a larga track to lake Enol.

On the return, we had over an hour waiting time for the bus.

Come here instead. Just as authentic including cow bells everywhere. And no, this time you won't need "more cowbell". 😀 fantastic hike around the lakes, a bull that lies down 5m in front of you and picturesque panorama.
The only thing i would avoid is the restaurant. The worst food i have had in spain. Better pack your own but visit this for drinks or the toilet.
