There are loads of more expensive, stylish places to eat in Corfu town, some good, some just aimed at tourists, but we always return to the small bar inside the market. There is no menu. There are only around four or five dishes. The service is a bit hectic, but the food is the freshest you will get and costs a fraction of what you will pay elsewhere. We had delicious calamari, Greek salad, bread, 2 small carafes of wine and beer. You could also have crispy, fried small sardines and king prawns. The food is basic, fresh and cooked authentically using the ingredients from the market. Also the Greeks at the next table were very entertaining with their singing. A place with character.

Coming to Corfu for the first time - I was dreaming about testing the authentic and local Cousine. Since we stayed in the all inclusive hotel - that experience was not part of the package.

Luckily we came across the Corfu Market. It sells mainly fresh fish, local veggies, fruits and some olives products.

But!! The street food cafe inside the market is the deal breaker. Managed by 3 people: the owner , Katharine (the chef) and the waiter: it offers magnificent experience of the Corfu local Cousine.

No menu. Simpel chairs. Glass tables. Local wine. 5 dishes. Locals. That’s it.

None of the places in Corfu embraced us as this place. We went there 3 times and always ordered fried sardines with chips and another time fried Kalamari with fresh vegetables. HEAVEN!

I would strongly recommend to visit the market and eat your lunche at this place. This is the experience we were looking for. It is not the place for the snobby people looking for the white clothes and pitch perfect win glasses.

This place has a soul and tradition. So, go there if you are hunting the authentic, tasteful and heartwarming food and environment.

While we on the hop on hop of bus tour of the town we spotted the newly renovated Corfu Farmers market, nestling under the walls of the New Fortress. It was only a short walk back from San Rocco Square to check it out. One area is dedicated to the sale of fish, and the rest to fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers and Greek specialties. Local farmers and fishermen have permanent market stalls where their sell their products, some fishermen even cook fresh-caught fish and offer it for sale.
TIP: There are a few open-air cafés nearby where you can enjoy an inexpensive lunch, of real Greek salad and lamb on a stick with a nice icy cold adult beverage.

Had a walk through the market after walking through the tunnel on the New Fortress.
Plenty of fish and fruit/vegetable stalls selling a great selection of produce at very reasonable prices.

This is a permanent covered market site, open Monday to Saturday. We visited Saturday morning about 9.30am and had expected it to be a lot busier. It wasn’t.
There are stalls selling fish, fresh fruit and veg, honey, herbs and other local produce.
It wasn’t bad but relatively small, quiet and not special.
It is close to the new fortress if you want to look at that, although it is currently closed for some reason.
