- Monika T1 contributionBe sure to arrive early - the light is fantastic, it's not too hot, you can hear the birds + frogs. Totally different flair than later (there are only a lot of people chattering) Wonderful experience, we were only 4 (!!) on the trail at 9h.... 2 guides are fixedly positioned for the safety of the tours. I went up by taxi (ideal - so you save some altitude meters from parking up) and then on foot back the 5km down to Costa Adeje !!Hallo Monika, vielen Dank für Ihre Bewertung und dass Sie Ihre Erfahrung mit uns teilen. - ScotlandMad10 contributionsI was staying in Costa Adeje having booked an escape a few weeks before.I didn't hire a car. I didn't want to go on a sanitised, hand-holding trip up Tiede. This was a good alternative for me as a lover of the great outdoors and mountains. I booked online the night before ($13). I caught a public bus (€1 45c) each way (3 stops) and walked up the hill from Adeje to the start point. I was an hour early (8.30am) -no problem at all. I gave my name (e-ticket wasn't necessary), was given a helmet, a map, and details of the walk. Told to allow 3hrs. I walked it in 2hrs. Be very careful to ensure you bring a passport or other identity card with you - it's not only for people to prove residency for a discount, but for identity in case of an accident. Wear grippy footwear. Nice scenery, lots of frogs making music. Waterfall nice, not much water. High cliffs at points with risk if rockfall, hence the helmet and advice not to hang about at these points. Passed lots of people starting out when I was nearly back at the start. Definite go early. Weather was also good fir me but starting to get overcast when I finished the walk. If you don't mind walking on a well-marked path with some steps, and like a gorge walk, just do it. Thanks to the man (possibly Hans) who worked there and welcomed ebenwhen so early.Visited March 2025Written March 20, 2025
- Beth WSurrey, United Kingdom38 contributionsAlthough the paths and steps on the trail are really good, there are steep parts, and it's rocky in places. So, I recommend hiring the walking poles (€4) if, like me, your knees dont like descending as much as climbing! Helmets are provided in case of rock fall. It rained a little while we were there, and some of the black rocks became slippery underfoot. Walking shoes or trainers are essential - this is not the trail for Crocs! We started our walk at just after 11am (long wait for toilet meant we didn't start promptly at our booked start time of 10.45) and made it back by 1.40pm. I'd recommend starting earlier if you can because to make sure we were back before 2pm (when the trail closes) we had to keep up the pace and I would have liked to take it a little slower and take more pictures. Fascinating scenery. The info boards at each point could do with updating. There is a toilet at the start/end of the trail, but only one so there was a bit of a queue for that. Trail not too busy though because they restrict the numbers. A morning we'll spent.Thank you very much for your fabulous review Beth! 🥰 How wonderful to know that the experience in the special nature reserve Barranco del Infierno has been a highlight for you. The route is of medium/low difficulty and the path is well conditioned. However, it is true that precautions should be taken and walking sticks are recommended mainly because of the stairs and the rocky terrain. Walking poles can indeed be purchased at the entrance. We always recommend booking as early as possible in order to benefit from a series of advantages such as avoiding the hours of greatest exposure to the sun, enjoying silence and nature in its purest state, avoiding the busiest times of day, etc. Toilet is often one of the reasons for stopping, although it is necessary! Also, new and updated information boards will be available in the coming weeks. We appreciate your visit and your positive comments in general, and invite you to come again soon. - zebedee70Lancaster, United Kingdom162 contributionsThey say you should never go back. I first came here 20 years ago, one morning, trying to escape the tedium of a holiday in some overpriced hotel in Costa Adeje. It seemed like a little bit of heaven. Sadly no longer. I’m not sure I had to pay on my first visit, I just wandered along the track, free as a bird. Now you pay 13€ for the privilege of wearing an unnecessary and ill fitting rock climbing helmet and being corralled by over officious attendants- we were prevented from eating an apple at one point. The problem is that it is just too busy- the scenery is nice but the over tourism is not. Much of the joy of walking in the mountains is the solitude, the sense of escaping the crowds, communing with nature (cliche I know). Germans are lovely people but it did feel that most of the population of Düsseldorf had decamped to this small corner of the Canary Islands. If you are going to come do so as early as possible. Better still buy a map, a compass and a guidebook and have a proper adventure elsewhereHello, thank you very much for your opinion and for sharing your experience. However, everything depends on how each person interprets it, and we would like to clarify the following points: Many years ago, the Barranco del Infierno was an unrestricted area, heavily overcrowded and damaged by human activity, leading to a lack of control and a series of accidents as a consequence. For this reason, today it is regulated with a limit on the number of visitors to protect the area and prevent similar incidents from occurring. The entrance fee includes access to the trail, the rental of a helmet for protection against possible rockfalls, insurance in case of emergency, as well as the services provided by the staff and guides along the route, among other benefits. It is likely that you attempted to eat in a critical area prone to rockfalls, where visitors are previously informed that stopping is not allowed. Additionally, this is explicitly stated in the consent form that you sign before entering. It is normal for the guides to intervene in such cases. We are currently in peak season, there is high demand, and please remember that, just like you as a tourist, other visitors also have the right to enjoy this natural site. We appreciate your visit. - ullamuayMilan, Italy1 contributionPros: 1. Stunning Scenery: The trail is breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and a peaceful waterfall at the end. The views of the gorge are unforgettable. 2. Well-Organized: The daily visitor limit keeps the area serene and ensures it's not overcrowded. The trail is well-marked, making navigation easy. 3. Rich Biodiversity: Spotting unique plants, birds, and even butterflies adds an exciting layer to the hike. Cons: 1. Permit System: While the permit system preserves the environment, it requires advance planning, which might not suit spontaneous hikers. 2. Moderate Challenge: The trail is manageable for most, but the uneven paths and elevation changes could be challenging for beginners or those with mobility issues. 3. Waterfall Expectations: While beautiful, the waterfall at the end is relatively small, especially in dry months. Overall, it feels like an adventure into Tenerife’s hidden beauty—a mix of tranquility, nature, and mild physical challenge. If you're in Tenerife, this is a hike you shouldn't miss!Hello ullamuay, thank you very much for your detailed review and for taking the time to share your experience. It is an honor to know that you enjoyed the breathtaking landscapes, the organization of the trail, and the unique biodiversity that makes this special nature reserve so remarkable. 🌿 We understand that the permit system and the need to make a reservation may require some advance planning, but it is essential to preserve this special environment and ensure a tranquil experience for everyone. We’re delighted that you consider this hike a must-do adventure in Tenerife, and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future for another unforgettable experience. - wielanduh1 contributionIt took us (63 and 82) the longest for the hike, 4 hours 30 minutes! But we did it and we are of course proud. The path is beautiful, it is a little experience. The brief safety briefing was good. Helmet is mandatory, we have also borrowed sticks. After the hike, stop at the Otelo restaurant to enjoy their specially prepared chicken and the view of the Barranco. - Adelio Di Nora4 contributionsWe chose to visit this place as the last stop of our holiday in tenerife and were amazed. The view was spectacular and we immersed ourselves in nature but if you are planning to go there you have to be aware that it is quite a challenging walk and is not recommended without minimal training. The route stretches for more than 6 kilometers with continuous ups and downs but in our opinion it is really worth it.Ciao, grazie per la tua splendida recensione. - Artur P1 contributionVery well organized trail (clear marking on the path, provided map with indicated stops, adequate security equipment). Limited number of visitors requires earlier booking. Recommended visit in mornings (less tourists and lower temperature enabling nicer climbing). Really worth effort to taste it!Hello Artur P, thank you for your wonderful review. There is a large underground car park a 5 minute walk away from the entrance at the bottom of the hill. Signposted before you get there. It cost us around 2.50 Euros to park for around 4 hoursHello, thank you very much for your wonderful review. - annevidal2Lyon, France80 contributionsVery nice hike! First part of the beautiful hike, majestic decor Second part a little less interesting but more in the shade so less difficult Cascade at the terminal without much interest It is better to book in advance on the site but it is possible to pay and book by arriving on site if there is room left... and if you are not many... 13 euros per adult as on the internet Attention, big parking problem, do not go to the entrance of the trail by car because narrow street and difficult to turn around, the covered parking a little lower before climbing in the street is very good and cheap ( 2.80 euros per 3 hours)Merci beaucoup pour votre merveilleux commentaire annevidal2! The ravine itself is beautiful even if the waterfall is not spectacular. We had already been many years ago when it was open access and we wanted to travel it again. We found the excursion personally very bearable, with something uneven but simple. The fact that it is a paid trail can be more or less disputed, but what we thought was a shame is that despite having chosen on the website the desired time of entry (10:30h), in the same morning we received an SMS saying in capital letters and with exclamations that we go before to avoid the heat of noon (when on the web the last time that can be chosen is at 11:30h), and that the trail would close at 12:30h. We are talking about a November day with cloud prediction, and indeed, it was cloudy. The website perfectly specifies that the closing hours are at 2.30pm. This is very unprofessional. Not only do you have to pay to access a natural place, but we found it an excuse to close the trail sooner. We think it is appropriate to limit daily access to the place to maintain it correctly, but we do not agree with the payment despite having a resident discount, however much they justify it with that includes rescue insurance. It should be remembered that federated mountaineers already have such insurance and are paying for it. Nor are the retired persons who in our case were two taken into account. In short, we do not recommend doing this trail while it is paid but any of the other multiple alternatives offered by the island.

Estimada/o 397dayrah:

I found the change in climate that we experienced during the hike particularly impressive: at the beginning it was hot and dry like on the coast, then cool and shady after entering the mountainous zone. Helmets are compulsory due to the risk of falling rocks. I liked that in addition to the helmet (included in the registration fee), you can also rent trekking poles for a fee of €4. Recommended: Restaurant Otelo at the end of the return journey. We traveled there by public bus, Barranco is a 20-minute walk uphill from the Adeje City Center bus stop.

This is a well organised walk in an interesting part of Tenerife. Safety is very important and everyone is supplied with a hard hat and told to wear it. Of course there are always people who think they know better.
There are several viewing points along the walk which have information boards and some of them give great views of Adeje and the coast.
There were some lovely wild flowers blooming in early February and we saw a few different birds, lizards and a black rabbit on our walk. The waterfall wasn’t a raging torrent but it fell from a reasonable height and you don’t really associate waterfalls with Tenerife so we felt it was worth a look.
The walk is classed as easy but it isn’t a stroll by any means. The path is very rocky in parts and steep in parts. It certainly wouldn’t be called easy in the USA! We set out before 9 am and it was very pleasant. We finished at 11.30am and I was hot. There isn’t a lot of shade along the way.
If you enjoy a hike with some great views and flora it is definitely worth a trip.

Thank you very much KBP-in-SY for your wonderful review.
We are delighted that you thoroughly enjoyed this unique and memorable experience at El Barranco del Infierno.
We appreciate your positive comments about the organisation and our work. We always try to offer a quality service, make visitors aware of the risks and the importance of preserving and conserving this area with regulation, etc.
We always recommend making a reservation as early as possible to benefit from several advantages, such as enjoying the silence in nature, avoiding the hours of greatest exposure to the sun or the possibility of finding parking near the entrance.
We appreciate your visit and recommendation, and invite you to come back soon.

If you like walking then Barranco del Infierno is a must do visit while in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. The walk takes approximately 3 hours through stunning scenery to the waterfall and back. The walk is quite strenuous in places but very doable at your own pace. The entrance tickets are easy to purchase via the website and 11 euros per person. There is also information on how to get to the site via bus or taxi. Highly recommended.

We are glad that you have enjoyed the experience in Barranco del Infierno to the fullest,
The difficulty is medium-low, the path is very well prepared and signposted, but it is true that you must be in healthy physical condition to complete the route successfully.
Booking is essential due to the limit number of people that can access everyday.
We appreciate your visit and hope you repeat it soon.

To start, we cannot comment on the trail because we showed up at our designated time, assessed the situation, then quickly asked for a refund. It was not what we were expecting. We hike regularly, so are comfortable finding trail heads and exploring new venues (We lean heavily on Alltrails). We read that this was a beautiful hike and made the assumption that the combination of having to schedule a time and pay for the hike meant that there would be a steady stream of hikers, but no crowds. What we ran into was the opposite. It felt more like showing up for a very large group event! We arrived ahead of our scheduled time and were asked to wait in a holding area that had at least 40-50 people waiting. Everyone was given mandated helmets to wear. Many people were dressed more for a walk than a hike... some wearing sandals or soft bottomed running shoes. We were told we were waiting "to allow the previous group to make space". Meanwhile, they closed off our holding area and started a new one for others arriving - to wait for us to "make space on the trail" once we were able to leave. We waited 20 minutes, then concluded this is not what we were looking for in a hike. We removed ourselves from the waiting area and asked for a refund, which they gladly gave us. When we left our group was still waiting. I'm sure it is a beautiful hike (there is so much beauty on the island), but we were not looking for a "group experience". We turned to Alltrails, found a glorious (free) hike around Montaña Roja and had a glorious day.

We are very sorry for your evaluation without knowing the trail and without having enjoyed the experience.
For your information the trail has a maximum access of 300 people per day. Helmets are a must because they are a great protection tool in case of rock falls.
It is also true that it is not free because it includes, among other things, rescue insurance which is not included in the Social Security nor in the rest of the free routes.
We understand that it was not what you were looking for but we are very sorry to hear that you rate us so badly without knowing what the experience is like.
Best regards and hopefully sometime in the future we will be able to offer you the best service.

The path is very well made and developed. However, you should behave carefully, otherwise you won't be able to enjoy the peace and quiet and the birds. In addition, if there is too much noise, stones can fall from above and in that case the path is immediately closed and everyone has to go back to the capture point. That's how it was for us in 2021. You should allow 3.5 hours for everything and take enough water and provisions with you. If you are in good shape, it is no problem. Good, sturdy shoes are essential. It is better to buy admission 1-2 months in advance, as access is limited and only possible from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. From 2:00 p.m. the park is closed and everyone has to be out. Rangers on the path ensure safety and compliance with the rules. One of the highlights for us.

This small hiking trail (2.5 to 3 hours there and back) was described in one of my travel guides, so we tackled it.
You need to register in advance because the number of people allowed per day is limited - so we registered and paid in advance (11 EUR per person at our time).
When we arrived, we were greeted very warmly and given a helmet for free (helmets are mandatory in the gorge), which we think is really great - as this is also the case on some German hiking trails!
Equipped with helmets, the park rangers gave us a short briefing and some information about the gorge - really great.
Super well-maintained and beautiful hiking trail.
Hiking boots and other equipment could also have been rented on site.

For those who have never seen a waterfall is good. But having to pay to walk 3h on rocks to go up and down and then see a small drop of water is not worth it. The city offers viewpoints with better views and without paying.
Since you pay at least could have the boards with information in condition instead of being all degraded. Parking near the door is difficult.

Excellent walk along the barranco wal and then down into the base with bumbling streams and croaking frogs. Flowers and trees made it all the more interesting. It was busy with frequent encountering walkers in the opposite direction. This was our 3rd visit and sadly the tame birds were absent at the rest point! Visitors have to book a timed slot (for 11euros) and we chose 11am and the day before we were urged by email to come earlier as temperatures would be high at noon. They weren't and in fact were slightly cooler than the days around it. We felt that they just wanted walkers in eariy so they could be ushered out by 2pm. But would go again.

Thank you very much BrianAM39 for your wonderful review.
We are glad that you enjoyed this unique and memorable experience in Tenerife.
We always recommend booking as early as possible to benefit from several advantages, such as enjoying the silence in nature, avoiding peak sun hours or the possibility to find parking close to the entrance. The reason why you found returning visitors is because they have followed our recommendations and, in the same way, it is early in the morning when you can find partridges, robins, blue tits, etc.
In any case, the route can be done in three hours at a normal pace and with stops for photographs or lunch. That is why 11:00h is still a viable access time to be able to finish at 14:00h. It is not our intention to rush or close earlier.
We thank you for your visit and invite you to come back soon.
Best regards

The hike is easy to do and definitely worth it. We were there at 8:30 a.m. The morning sun creates particularly beautiful effects on the walls of the gorge. Interesting hiking trail, easy level of difficulty, normal fitness is sufficient. Super beautiful views on the way to the waterfall. The waterfall at the end had little water and was not a particular highlight.

Hi,
We have a 1 year old kid. We were planning to carry him on us in a baby carrier during the walk. Is it ok? How long does the walk take approximately?
Thanks,

Dear Rachel,
The path is currently open, it only closes when there are meteorological alerts, wind or rain.
If the weather is good, December 31 will be open normally. Every day around 8:30 we assess if the path is in optimal conditions to open or not, in this case we notify customers.
Best regards,
