About
Just 10 minutes drive from the bustle of Las Americas, you find the traditional working farm of “La Caldera”, nestling in a lush valley, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, volcanic mountains, reservoirs, forests and canyons. The farm is situated in a protected area of outstanding natural beauty, fringed by orange groves, avocado trees and a banana plantation. Here you are free to trek with our horses and guides into a “secret” Tenerife, seen by few outsiders.

Mean and condescending tour guide
Feb 2020 • Couples
I have ridden at Caldera del Rey many times over the years and always had an amazing time. However, after a 4 year break, I have returned with my partner to have probably the worst riding experience ever. We were greeted rudely by a blonde woman and proceeded to stand for 20 minutes while she was doing her own thing and prepping the horses. She barked at us to get hats (She failed to mention where from, would not have known had I not been before). She told us to get on and took us out to the plantation. She spent the whole time chatting to her friend while we rode in front, not even paying enough attention to us to tell us whether we are to go left or right- we had to guess. Yelled at my partner several times, despite being told many times that he is a beginner and has only ridden a few times. There was absolutely no need to yell, she could have explained calmly what we are to do, where she wants us to go etc. Am very glad her horrid treatment didn't put him off riding- it surely would have put me off if it happened on one of my first ever rides. We returned after about 40min (not a scheduled hour), tied up the horses and stood there as she relayed our trip to her pals in Spanish, ignoring us entirely. We could have left without paying, as she didn't really seem to care at all. The few times she spoke to us, she was condescending and very, very mean.

All in all, it was a drastic difference from the previous experiences we've had at Caldera del Rey. We have ridden with the owner(Karen, if I remember correctly) and some of the other girls, and had an amazing time.

I really am not one to leave negative reviews, however this experience has left me upset and never wanting to return here.

Rude, unpleasant and to be avoided
Jul 2019
This place was recommended by my hotel as it was relatively close by for a short taxi journey. Our driver found it difficult to locate and called the number provided. He appeared a little frustrated by the conversation. We arrived just on time despite getting lost. The word reception is on the inside of the gate so it’s not immediately obvious where you go until you open the reception gate. We were met by a blonde woman who was far from welcoming. She immediately interrogated me about my daughter’s riding experience and she was very negative and condescending. The horses were not ready for the start of the trek and as she continued to interrogate me about my daughter’s suitability to riding she moaned about getting the horse ready. My daughter had picked up on this woman’s negativity but we hoped it would improve. We were instructed to fit a hat and pointed in the direction to get one. When we came back out we were shouted at to get the body armour. This woman made us all feel we were a major inconvenience to her. She was downright rude and her manner was dismissive. She did not check my daughter had put her hat and body armour securely. My daughter was told to get on the untethered horse. She was offered no step to make it easier or any assistance by this woman. As the horse was not secured it moved quite quickly which my daughter had not been expecting. She was a little unsettled and upset by these interactions. My daughter loves horse riding and had enjoyed two treks in the Algarve earlier in July. She decided she did not want to continue with this riding experience as she was too upset by this woman’s rudeness.
When I advised we would not continue with this riding experience the woman demanded payment as she had had to prepare her horses. She did this during the time I would have been paying for. We did not pay. I was not paying to be patronised and treated like an idiot by this female who clearly felt superior to visitors. I most certainly was not paying for my daughter to be reduced to tears and for this woman to look on and display no empathy or take responsibility for her lack of welcome.
Fortunately this experience has not put my daughter off and she had been back riding at home.
This woman was judgemental and condescending and showed no enthusiasm to paying visitors. She made no effort to relax and reassure my daughter after her frosty welcome.
We advised our hotel of this negative experience and it is unlikely this place will be recommended to future guests interested in a horse riding trek.

Rude & Unorganised!
On arrival myself and my 7 family members wondered in with no welcome, eventually (after about 20 mins) a lady came over, told us where the riding hats were and to find one that fits, we had no help with this. Luckily myself and my mother in law are experienced riders so we had to fit the children with whatever hats we could find, all of which were dirty and smelly.
Considering we had booked this ride 4 months previous, it was very unorganised, we were not shown to our horses, we had to do our own girths and stirrups (the children had no idea so I had to go around and do them myself!).
Whilst on the ride one of the children’s ponies bucked and unseated him, luckily he landed on the ponies neck and managed to shuffle back into the saddle, the bucking pony caught one of the other children on the knee leaving a nasty bruise. (obviously all horses have a mind of their own but we had no warning of this pony being the way she was.)
On the way back the horse I was riding went to the toilet, leaving me a few yards behind. Being experienced I had a little trot to catch back up to save them stopping and waiting, only to be shouted at and spoken to like muck by the owner!
When I booked the ride I was told that the experienced riders may have a canter, but on the ride we weren’t even offered the option - if you want a faster ride go elsewhere!
All in all I was very disappointed, especially for the €240 we paid.

Nice people, helped us when the owner had forgotten our appointment. We had to wait half an hour, for she showed up after the phonecall of one of the horse owners. Otherwise she hadn't come at all. We have seen a lot of bananas and that is it. The taxidriver adviced a different horseriding school. We have been in Cyprus a year before. That was an amazing ride on very Nice reliable horses

Lovely ride with my young daughter, nice scenery and a change from sitting by the pool.
More suited to non experienced as it's just walking.

BAD DAY AT THE STABLES
Jan 2019 • Solo
Spoke to a lady when booking and told her I was an experienced rider of over 30 years and was booked in for a 4pm ride the next day. On my arrvial 20 minutes early I spoke to a lady who was grooming a horse and told to go down to the bottom stables and tell the Spanish guy who spoke little English that I was there for a 4pm ride. After watching this guy cutting grass for 10 minutes he came over and then led me back up to the top stables where he saddled up two horses. After choosing a riding hat and telling him I was an experienced rider the two of us rode off into this large banana plantation. After one hour not a trot, canter or gallop just plodding round at walking pace and at the end of the day there are only so many bananas you can look at. The instructor/handyman seemed to enjoy the cigarettes he smoked while on the 'hack'. Very disappointed and not value for 30 euros. For experienced riders I'd go elsewhere on the island unless when you phone they can guarantee something other than a meander through the plantation.
The only positive is that my horse Ruby was a nice steady 19 year old and ideal for adults riders of whatever experience.

Kind and easygoing staff who do everything to meet your wishes! The communication already started very well online and went on during the visit. The horses are cared for very well and it is a very animal-friendly place. The tour was splendid, photos are taken during the ride and the view is just amazing. Suited for beginners and experienced riders.

What a find! Great Horse riding experience a short walk from our apartment. Karen was amazing so patient, knowledgable and fun. We were a mixed ability group of three friends., the most experienced of whom has already booked for a private lesson on Friday. Will definitely visit again when visiting Tenerife. Thank you Karen it is lovely to see someone who cares so much for their horses! (Donkeys and cats) xxx

We visited here on the 7th July at half 4 I rode ruby such a beautiful horse! We went through the banana plantation it was lovely and warm just make sure you wear sun cream. My mom and sister loved it and want to go back to do it again, I wasn't so much of a fan just found it a bit boring that's just my opinion though. But you should defo give it ago.
