We drove to Lucera on our tour of southern Italy. We love history and were looking forward to visiting this site. Unfortunately it was locked up; luckily we were also visiting the castle which was quite impressive, just for its size.

Another hidden gem in the town of Lucera. It's so well hidden and off the beaten track that you end up having the whole place to yourself and you can explore at leisure. This whole town radiates ancient history through multiple historical periods. I strongly...More

The city of Lucera is incredibly full of history. One of the many incredible sites is the Roman Amphitheater. It is a very special place.

Very well preserved Roman Anfiteatro. Huge in size. Unbelievable that such a structure would be built, indicates the importance of town in older times.

Over priced.we decided not to pay the entrance fee as from the entrance there was not a lot to see and not well maintained.

We came to Lucera for the castle, this was a nice surprise. Pretty large amphitheatre, fairly well preserved. You're not in the Colosseum but it's worth the visit if you're in town.

We walked down to this site only to find the area fenced off. There were many locals just hanging about watching us and we felt unsafe and uncomfortable. We about turned and walked quickly back to the main road.

It's a simple Amphitheater but it's nice to actually see how a real one really looks like and to know that some time ago there were games and fights in there! Very cheap entry (2\3 euros) so why not taking a look ;)

We had the place to ourselves, it was 10:30 on a February morning, but the assistants helped us with an English brochure to accompany our walk around the site, in the sun. The site is very well maintained, without being over 'fixed'. Good value for...More
