We visited on Christmas Eve so the roads to the cathedral area were blocked off but once on foot we found the place to be accessible and fascinating. It's essentially two streets, one on each side of the river but there are plenty of foods on offer plus historical buildings (some are hotels that you can stay in). Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese fusion - loved it.

Amazing street full of cafes, restaurants and much more. So many things to see. Wall art, local life, fresh baked goods for sale, and some great photo ops. You won’t be disappointed, a must do when visiting the area.

We stopped by on our way during a family vacation. To tell the truth I wasn’t too excited about visiting the area. I just wanted to get to our destination. But I am really glad that we stopped by. It was a quaint little waterfront community that had just the right atmosphere. I was very pleased with the whole ambiance.

The Chanthaburi Oldtown across the river from the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Chanthaburi is another must visit for your trip here. A small maybe 500m x 1000m area of old houses and community, dotted with homestays and hotels, cafes, bakeries and coffeeshops as well as actual live in homes of the local community.

Loved the old architecture, easy going streets and amazing food found in this waterfront area. Only wished there are more bridges around the area so you can hop forth and back to take better photos.

This waterfront community is a must visit when going to Chanthaburi. You really feel the atmosphere of the old days here with many old houses, and some renovated. The ones renovated are mostly converted to small hotels and restaurants. This is of course a good thing as it brings life to the area, even though I found it more interesting from an aesthetic point of view some years back before to much renovation. But getting something to eat is also important. In fact I've had some of the best food in Thailand on this road.

I just wish that they could make this a pedestrian street, or at least car free. Sometimes it feels that you are risking your life having to fight with cars and motorbikes over the space on this narrow road.

I'll be back.

It's like an old town in Chanthaburi. Worth a visit. Check out the food and deserts along the street. And lots of photo taking opportunities.

The French were only in Chantaburi for 11 years but they left their mark in the pretty shuttered two-storey frontages of the waterfront district, where Chinese traders first did business centuries ago. Many of them seem still to be here, their cluttered warehouse/trading/living/sleeping rooms (there's little distinction) are often left cheerfully open onto the street so that you can share in their lives and they in yours. The eastern end is getting a bit gentrified, with some good restaurants/bars and a few quite tasteful shops, but as you go W. it gets considerably less glamorous but still fascinating, even more when you reach the jewellery quarter with its packed and busy trading rooms, workshops, assay centres, retail outlets and much more besides.

The road is about a kilometre long with great shops, restaurants and some unique architecture. Very friendly people with great street food and snacks, grab a coffee or some lunch and enjoy the river its worthwhile. Also at the end of the street the Cathedral side 300 hundreds metres to the right is the Gem Market which is definitely something to see.

Chantaboon is the old name for the modern Thai provincial city of Chanthaburi. It literally means "Moon City".

The Chanthaburi River flows through modern Chanthaburi, before it empties into the Gulf of Siam some 30 km further downstream.

It was here in the reign of the Siamese King Narai (1656-88) that the area was first settled, not only by native Thais (or Siamese) but by Chinese immigrants from Vietnam who were fleeing religious persecution at home from a Buddhist dominated monarchy and government.

Unfortunately the area has been hit by the realities of modern economic life, and many of the thriving Chinese/Vietnamese businesses that made the area so vibrant, moved to other parts of the developing city of Chantaburi.

Despite that, Chantaboon Waterfront Community has a charm and integrity of its own and is well worth one or two hours of your time to wander its narrow riverside streets.

A quaint, chic walking area to visit and enjoy. It’s more than your typical Thai market. This one sits alongside a river that some of the cafes take advantage of the ambiance. Great for food tasting and buying souvenirs. A very delightful place.
