The chap who showed us around was very knowledgeable in the workings of the mill and it's history.
The Ferguson gang and their use of the mill as a gang HQ adds a certain mystery and bohemian fun to the place.
The staff have clearly listened to the one negative review and now have refrigerator magnets on sale. Unfortunately they weren't able to put in elevators to cater for the morbidly obese and the sack pulley is only capable of lifting 90kg through the trapdoors to get to the silos at the top of the mill.
If you are normal you will thoroughly enjoy this amazing place. I especially liked how well built it is and the carpentry involved.

We had a very knowledgeable talk from John, our guide, about the mill and it’s history. Although we have visited other mills we learnt so much more about how it all worked and the mechanisms involved. We would totally recommend it.

We cycled round to the Shalford Mill & as National Trust members it is literally the closes trust property to us. John showed us round - he was a delight - so knowledgeable with a good measure of humour thrown in – fascinating to hear the tales associated with the mill – I love the idea of the fire brigade turning up like the RAC trying to sell you services as your premises was a blaze… good marketing…
The stories of the Ferguson gang were an added bonus – to have seen the Fortum and Mason van arrive must have been quite something in the day – but the legacy that these women left behind is astonishing… Philanthropy is certainly not a new phenomenon…
Well worth the visit – go on make the time – especially if like us you probably drive passed it most days…

It was too short and not suitable for fat people because on one hole, you had to go up a ladder and it was too thin and I nearly got stuck! There was a guided tour. It was alright. There was no gift shop which is a pity as I like fridge magnets. Another disappointment is there is no parking! There is no cafe.

This fascinating grain mill is a piece of history preserved with all its original machinery in place. Shalford Mill is no longer a working mill, but a guided tour with one of the volunteers who take visitors around it soon brings it to life - a life that was originally spared by the "Ferguson Gang", a group of early conservationists whose story, on its own, is worth relating. The Mill is tucked away and off the main road, so visitors must find parking in the car park of the very excellent Seahorse Inn which is on the main road - just the place to go to have lunch after a visit to the Mill. On open days, such as the one I went to, there are cooking demos put on for child visitors and home grown and milled flour and other products from Imbhams Farm Granary are on sale. The Mill is on three floors, all accessed by steep ladder-like stairs, so this is not a good bet for those who have trouble walking. However, the surrounding area is very attractive, with the sound of the Tillingbourne stream rushing past the Mill and a field with sheep and cattle grazing in it to enchant the eyes. The Mill is National Trust owned, so if you are a member entrance is free. At the time I visited I believe the adult entry fee was £2.75 and the cooking demonstration with hands-on participation was £4.00.

Popped in here to have a look around the old mill. Made the error, as many had before us, and drove down the drive to the mill only to find that there's no parking there. Reversed back up the drive, and parked in the Blue Sky company car park. Perfect. The volunteers bring the Mill alive - they're marvellous and really know they're stuff. It was a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon - I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Great place to spend an hour or so.
Fantastic guided tour by John, very interesting and informative, recommended and out of three NT properties we visited in the area that day, by far the most enjoyable.

Visited this old water mill in Shalford near Guildford in Surrey. Was very impressed with John who spent a lot of time touring us around the mill, sharing his in depth knowledge about the history of the mill and how the mill operated back in the day. This made the visit extremely worthwhile and we all learnt a lot, including my two young children.
