Visit to Shalford Mill

National Trust volunteer (John) gave us a fascinating tour of the mill. Highly recommend this visit. Learnt so much and his enthusiasm was infectious. So that's where the expression "fair to middling" comes from!

Small but interesting
Oct 2019
Doesn't take long to look around the mill itself but well worth visiting if you're close by. We found it very interesting and well worth the climb to the top floor, although this is up four very narrow sets stairs. Also well worth reading the history of the mill. There is a tour starting every half an hour which we didn't take but it would be a longer visit if you take this.

A great national trust guided tour by a very knowledgeable guide John. A very informative insight of the history and workings of the Mill. The tour was approx 45 minutes. There were teens also on the tour who equally enjoyed the interesting history of the Mill. Will be returning to walk the nature trail walk alongside the Mill. Gave it a miss this time as there was a marathon run taking place.

Beautiful Piece of Industrial History
Aug 2019
18th-century Grade II listed watermill located on the River Tillingbourne, near Guildford, England. Fascinating piece of industrial history. Although not working you can visit all three floors and the guide we had, David was just excellent. He conveys his real enthusiasm about mills.

Fascinating economic history; a river where there were 24 mills in a 11 mile stretch!.

National Trust Shalford Mill

We visited Shalford mill after a morning at Dapdune wharf  on the 11th of August 2019. Just a short car journey away this little National trust site is certainly worth a visit. There is only a drop off point on site and no parking. But ample parking in nearby residential roads.

For such a small National trust building it is steeped in history and amazed us all by what we learnt while visiting. There are also nearby trails and walks which had fantastic views.

Shalford mill is a 18th Century water mill that is has been preserved although no longer functional its completely intact much to the amazement of my children.

Visit is by guided tour only and I wish I had taken note of our tour guides name as he was so informative and knowledgeable. He managed to keep my children aged 10 6 & 2 entertained the whole time. If he happenes to read this or the National trust sees this then he’s a credit to the trust for the engagement and entertainment provided please get in touch so I can tell you he deserves praise.

I won’t detail too much of the tour as to not spoil it’s for others but I was amazed by the history of the Ferguson gang and promptly purchased the National Trust book about them on the journey home. Discovering how much was linked to what the trust is today amazed us all as family

The mill is over a few floors with steep ladders and low headspace so you need to be able to navigate these steps to get the best from the tour. The mill is in a picturesque setting and I really can’t recommend this enough don’t let this little gem pass by.
