Panoramic views from the top
Apr 2021
There are 2 ways here: down the Portsmouth Road from Guildford town centre (20 minutes walk or so) or down the Wey Navigation Path from Millmead and then just before the wooden footbridge turnn right up the very quaint, but very steep Ferry Lane: St Catherine's Hill is at the end/start of Ferry Lane where it meets Portsmouth Road. The ruin of St Catherine's chantry chapel are at the top and if you hike up you'll be rewarded by panoramic views across Guildford and the surrounding countryside. St Catherine's Hill is made up of 'golden' sandstone which supposedly gave Guildford its name: 'the golden ford'.

Quiet and relaxing

A walk up to the ruin on st Catherine's hill is a nice way to spend a sunny evening. It's a short and an easy track and then a grassy path to take you to the fenced off ruins of an old chapel. It's actually very old being around 14th century. There's an information board with some illustrations showing it ruined at least since the mid 1700s.

The views are impressive.

A little hike

Went on a afternoon walk up here the scenery is great, the old ruin has a bit of history bombed in the war having been mistaken for St Martha`s.

Lovely place to sit and picnic
Dec 2017 • Friends
On a sunny winter's day, this was a good place to sit and eat a picnic. The view is lovely. The church is in an advanced state of ruination and is fenced off, but that doesn't really matter. Don't sit too close to the railway tunnel!

Magical chapel ruin at the top of St Catherine's Hill and a wonderful view
Dec 2017 • Family
A bit off the beaten track. Most people who pass by on the Godalming to Guilford road will have seen St Catherines Chapel but many have never visited it. There is limited parking in Ferry Lane which gives you a couple of hours, which is more than enough.

You then need to walk up a hill to find the chapel. Its fairly steep but should be achievable by most people. Once at the top you find a chapel ruin dating back to the 1300's. Built for convenience rather than anything else it still has a magical feel to it. If you visit on a clear day you will get fantastic views of Guildford and surrounding villages. It is also fairly quiet so why not take your loved one on a picnic up there.
