This is an attractive stretch of canal.
Sep 2021 • Couples
We went to the canal at the main basin in Retford, turned left and walked along the towpath as far as the Packet Inn. Although it goes through a built up, urban area, it is an attractive stretch of canal and I particularly liked the part where the back gardens of a row of terraced houses back onto the canal; and with a few of them sporting washing lines as well as the obligatory garden sheds, it felt rather timeless.

Once we got to the pub (and it was a short walk) we simply walked along Grove Street back to the Market Place.

Sunny stroll
Sep 2020
Blessed with a beautiful day we enjoyed a stroll along a stretch of the canal starting from Retford, coming across the odd group of mallards and fish of different sizes. There is something so relaxing and restorative about walking beside a canal or a river. Beside the path, at the end of people's gardens, there were plenty of flowers in bloom and a handful of remaining blackberries. On the opposite bank we admired the colourful and well looked after gardens where a few of the owners were sitting out enjoying a drink. The information panels are worth reading as they explain the history of the canal, including an interesting fact about the stone used in the construction of the Houses of Parliament.

The Chesterfield Canal
Mar 2020
We love the Chesterfield Canal, we have walked many miles of the towpath and we have travelled by narrowboat from West Stockwith to Norwood Tunnel. It is well worth travelling the whole stretch if you can. The beauty of travelling up the Giants Staircase of locks is not to be missed. We consider it to be one of the beautiful canals of the UK and we have travelled many of them. Tranquil, peaceful and scenic. We have spent many a time here, so we have seen summer on the lazy days ambling along, winter and spring this year and with Corvid-19 it seems we will be here longer than anticipated. The locals are very friendly and the towns of Retford and Worksop are good places to shop for supplies.

There are some beautiful mooring spots, so many that we are spoiled for choice.

I would recommend you visit the whole route as to miss the Giant Staircase locks would be a missed opportunity to see how beautiful this canal compares with the much loved Llangollen, we rate The Chesterfield Canal above that...

Canal boat holiday
Aug 2019 • Family
We hired 2 barges for a week and had a fabulous holiday from west Stockwith to Shireoaks and beyond. The canal is a fantastic place to be and changes around every corner. It was a very relaxing friendly holiday. Seeing our local area from a different aspect...canal side.

Take a walk along the tow path of this beautiful Canal from the Basin by the Locks and wave to a passing Canal boat , the silence is almost deafening as you wander along and see somedays dog walkers and somedays just be at peace by yourself , it is beautiful , just take a look , well worth a little visit :)
