It is amazing what you can find in a small town like Modane. This little museum, once a cinema, has an amazing collection of mechanical pianos and lots of information about the history of Modane. We liked the projection in silhouette of examples of different dances of the region. We were amazed in how many people lived in the town before the border controls were lifted. The lady in the museum explained in detail some of the history of Modane. However, in the mock café the piano could really due with tuning!!
A very interesting hour.

We knew little about Modane until we came here. I think we were the only visitors that day and the woman on the desk went out of her way to show us things and answer our questions. Modane has a very interesting history and we were very impressed by this little museum's attempt to portray it. There are no translations on the exhibits but we were given a sheet of information in English which explained the different scenes very well. Without this I think a lot of people would find the videos quite hard to follow.
We spent an excellent hour and a half here. Many thanks to the woman in charge.

This museum makes us learn about the social and economic history of the French Alps and specially of the border. In addition, you learn about sports and music of the 1800. It is great for everyone. I recommended it strongly.

My mom, sister and I visited in September 2019, hoping to learn more about our ancestors. Claudine was fabulous! We learned so much about the history of Modane, how our Italian ancestors came here to build the railroad, then moved through Modane, getting their information ready for the journey to the USA. We learned a lot about the bombing during WWII, and enjoyed the player pianos, the displays - everything about the museum is fabulous! This is a hidden gem but a must for anyone visiting Modane.
