About
The Sint-Alexiusbegijnhof is an oasis of peace in the heart of the city. It is the ideal place to learn more about the lives of the beguines and that of our ancestors. Visit an authentically decorated beguinage house, discover life as it was in the 19th and early 20th century and take a quiet walk in the ornamental and herb garden! Free entrance.

Taking you back in time

Peaceful and quiet, off a very busy street (Brusselse Straat), taking one back to the 18th century secluded living of single women who took care of each other.

Needs some more renovation
Sep 2018 • Solo
This begijnhof is located in the town centre, entering through a gate off one of the main streets. The gate can easily be missed. It is of the square type, meaning that all the houses lie around 1 very large square, which does host the church and a small replica of the caves of Lourdes. Some of the houses have been nicely renovated, and many have nice and colourful plants in front of them. However, part of the beguinage still awaits renovation. The church was, like most other buildings in the town, burned by the German troops during world war I, so the current church is post WWI. In a corner at the far end, there is the beguinage and folk museum.

Interesting when you're in the neighbourhood

This museum is an ancient monestary and tells a lot about the history around it. It's very intersting for people who believe or want to know more about the religion in the area in the formal century. When visiting Dendermonde, a place you should visit

This beguinage looks a bit dilapidated. That has a certain charm, but for the longer term I think they should restore or clean some things here. There's a small church/chapel in the center, with a bench. I didn't notice any other special buildings. It looked less interesting than other beguinages I've seen in Tongeren, Brugge, Amsterdam, Turnhout, Lier, Kortrijk, and Mechelen.

In the middle of the city

It is one of the most beautiful begijnhofs of Belgium. It is a UNESCO heritage site. Most beautiful in spring when the crocuses are blooming or during fall foliage.

It could be delightful. Hidden behind a busy street, it is an oasis of calm. True, many of the houses could do with repairs but I have seldom seen such a complete Begijnenhof. Compared with Anderlecht and others I have seen, only Bruges is bigger. There is an interesting little museum but our visit was spoiled for me by the unfriendliness of the natives towards my guests who were (a) black (b) exclaiming enthusiastically over the furnishings and taking selfies and (c) horror of horrors - had two little girls with them! The way the staff spoke to them, reprimanding adults for sitting on chairs that were not marked as not to be sat on, was inexcusable. I know they would not have spoken that way to other Flemish people. Sad.

English:
Walk through the gate and a small alley brings you to the beguinage.
The small houses are built around a green meadow with a chapel surrounded by trees. Very lovely to visit on a summer day. On one side the houses are painted white, the other side the houses are in unpainted brick. You don’t have cobblestones as in the other Flemish beguinages, but just a dirt road. Some houses have been beautifully restored, others still need to be renovated.

Well worth a visit.

The Zwijvekemuseum is not located in this beguinage, but in the Abbey of Zwijveke.

Nederlands:

If you like the Bruges Begijnhof, you will like this one as well...

This hidden place is one of the few remaining places that wasn't destroyed in Dendermonde by the German troups during WW1 because apparantly their horses were stalled here, is worth visiting, even though it needs further restauration. It is a quiet, open space with all the houses around the central grass area. There is a small local museum, and if you are lucky or take a guided tour, you also can enter the house of the "grootjuffrouw". Beware of your head on the stairway!

FYI Zwijvekemuseum is located elsewhere.
