Take a small 100 person excursion boat (offered with most river cruises) and Sanpan with 30 people if weather is good to explore far into the Gorges. It’s gorgeous! The month of November offers stunning landscape of red maple trees and local fauna. Monkeys live in the Canyon, along with wild ducks. Ancient, 2000 year old hanging coffins are visible along with spectacular limestone, jade and granit cliffs.

The Wushan Three Little Gorges also known as the Daning River Three Little Gorges covers an extensive space of over 30 miles from Wushan County in the South to Dachang, an ancient town in the North. The first one is Dragon Gate Gorge. The second is Misty Gorge and the third is Emerald Gorge.
Each Gorge is unique and each one offers plenty to see. For example, the Dragon Gate Gorge refers to the section from the west pass of Wu Gorge to the Yinwo Tan. It is full of precipitous cliffs and sites such as the Bear Cave, Nigh-dragoon pole and others. The Misty Gorge is also known as the Iron coffin gorge. This gorge is full of rock on both sides. Just like clouds, if you pay attention, you can see forms of animals and even real animals among the cliffs. Finally in the Emerald Gorge you can see yes, Boat Coffins. There is also an ancient town, Dachang, worth seen. It is 1700 years old!
Again, there is a one-day tour you can take from Wushan and see these three little gorges. You can take no.101 or 105 buses to reach Three Little Gorges Tourist Reception Center or a taxi. Both are inexpensive and so it is the tour.
I like to leave you with a couple interesting things I saw. The Boat Coffins a funeral custom in ancient times. A dead person was put into a coffin shaped like a boat. It was hung on a cliff or buried in the ground by an ancient temple. The suspended coffins are hung on the bluff of the precipice. They hung 33 to 164 feet high and some even as high as 328 feet above the ground. You can see both of them in your three little gorge tours – amazing things!
Zàijiàn or adios, ciao, good-bye me friends.

As part of our Viking River Cruise, we transferred to these small boats in order to cruise through the Lesser Three Gorges.
We were apprehensive about the scenery because it was an overcast day with an occasional drizzle. However, it seemed to add to the short (perhaps 90 minutes) cruise because it produced clouds hanging over the mountains and made for a lovely, natural scene.
Our tour guide - a local young lady - was both charming and informative. A university graduate, her story of the struggle to achieve her education was stirring, as was her singing of some of the local folk songs.
A quite enjoyable ride. Beats the heck out of seeing still more high-rise city condominium complexes.

If you take the Yangtze River cruise, make sure you take this excursion - you will be amazed at the towering sides of the gorge as you proceed upstream in a small boats. Pictures do not do justice to what the eye sees.

The three lesser gorges was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my life! It was fantastic. A must see!! Try to rent a private boat if you can. They are also much, much better than the three large gorges.

Sanpan is the best way to appreciate these small tributaries off the Yangtze. Quiet, peaceful, wonderful scenery. You can see where the villlagers who remained moved up the mountains to restart their lives. About an hours round trip, it's well worth it.

No wildlife to see on the river. Interesting commentary from the guide. Terrible toilets at the destination. Fun music and dancing show by local people at the destination pontoon.

Up close and personal with the great geography.

Lovely scenery including a small village and s hanging coffin

Only takes about an hour and is well worth the time to visit.
Quite relaxing.

If in a river cruise you will likely be offered this opportunity otherwise I think it may be hard to do.

We toured the Lesser Three Gorges in small river boats. You really got up close and personal with cliffs and all they hold.

This is a side trip from the Three Gorges Cruise. You take a small boat across crevaces in the mountains with beautiful views. Nice aside from the big ships.
