Across the road from the palace and MARE museum is the Basilica of Santa Maria, a modern seventeenth century building. I opted for the €2 ticket to climb the bell tower. That was quite a fun choice - there were about 170 steps and the last 30 or so were very narrow so my shoulders brushed each side of the stairwell! The views were impressive and you could walk onto part of the roof too. It did give an idea of the size of the palm tree oasis as well as view of the suspension bridge. On the plus side, I was certainly warmer after the climb! Outside the church are several sculptures and the doorways are also rather impressive! As my visit was on a Sunday morning I couldn't go into the church itself as there were services going on.

Basilica is Elx soul - live place to pray and think inside - normal part of life like in other Spanish towns. Children play ball right outside using old walls as if it is school wall. Tiny museum of Elx mystery (the entrance is from the back of the Basilica) shares details of relics finding and yearly celebration that happens in Elx to remember this great event.
the place is very calm and peaceful.

I recommend going here and especially seeing the view from the top of the tower but I felt I would have enjoyed the experience more if there had been more information that wasn’t basically catholic propaganda. “The population of Elche is faithful and devoted to the Virgin Mary” was repeated in a few different ways over and over and over and over. I know it’s a church but it is more than that! I did not come here to read a sermon - if I did I would’ve attended an actual service. I want to know about the building’s Muslim past or why someone had made little displays of everyday items on each floor. I’m still puzzled about the displays... I suppose they would illustrate what it was like to live in the church tower - but who lived there? why did the church decide to display these items? And what was it like for the people who lived and worked in and around the church historically? This is a building of great historical value and religious importance but unfortunately neither came across in the frenzy to display contemporary piosity. This sentiment is why spain is the country where beautiful old art is allowed to be “restored” into monkey jesus... Overall during my visit I’ve seen over and over and over a disrespect for history that is absolutely appalling. This seems to be changing fortunately and I’ve absolutely met with the opposite - people and museums that embrace history and are doing great work to promote awareness of the history of the area. However, this change has not yet reached the basilica de Santa Maria.

Visited Basilica de Sandra Maria.
Parked up in the town and walked up towards the tower. It's behind the houses up a couple of winding roads. The dog mess is everywhere and it's very hard to miss treading in it. When you get up there the view is nice but not wow. Is it worth the drive and the walk - No!

We were lucky enough to visit while there was a choir practice going on. It was very humbling to be able to listen to the beautiful singing, I presume they were practicing for the upcoming ‘Misteri d’Elx’ the cities major festival in August which has received UNESCO World Heritage status. The basilica itself is not the most spectacular I have been to but as with every religious place of worship it is full of unique treasures. The highlight was the climb to the top of the bell tower, costing €2. It is quite a climb of 170 steps and gets extremely narrow towards the top. There is however four points at which to rest and read up on the history of the basilica and the ‘ Misteri d’Elx’. Your reward for persevering with the ascent is fantastic 360 degree views of the city particularly highlighting the vastness of the palm groves. A must visit.

We arrived as day trip to Elche from Alicante in the 30 mn train journey (2 or 3 stops ) easy ride 'stop at El Parque' . The tourist information guy recommended the climb to the tower to get a view so we did ! Modest sum and easy climb with 170 marked steps up ! 4 stops to rest if you are not too fit ! I love climbing up to the church bell terrace ! We were all on our own in the middle of the day so the weather was really pleasant ! The view is amazing ! Nowhere else could we take a photo of the palm grove like at the top of the church tower ! We enjoyed it on our own . After our descent, the church closed. We were very lucky ! Check out the hours to avoid any disappointment !

This building is architecturally beautiful and sits in the town square. Once inside it is the most beautiful church with lots of history. My partner ventured up to the top of the bell tower and had the most amazing view of the city.

We paid 2€ each to climb the bell tower. 173 steps to reach the top but well worth it for the fantastic views on offer from the top! A visit into the church afterwards (free entry) and the most stunning and beautiful sight beholds you.
Definitely worth a visit

The Basilica de Santa Maria is beatiful Church in the city centre of Elche. It takes only A couple of minutes but it shows the beauty.
Nice thing to do is walk to the back of the church on the inside and wait until someone tries to look through the small window of the door. At that moment look back and watch there reaction. (Be careful only to be Done with younger people as they will jump A meter up high)
