A visit to Basilica de Santa Maria is a must if your in Elche... The bell tower is just amazing!!!! The €2 administration fee is a bargain. The 270 or so spiral staircase is not for everyone, it gets quite narrow at the very top and if your claustrophobic maybe not for you... But all that said if you can give it a go.. On each level on the way up that have set out how it would have been in the past. The hole experience on the way up is very informative and fun.. and the views from the top “BREATHTAKING” May just be helpful to ask at the bottom how many people are already up the tower as passing people on the stairs can be a bit challenging...

This church isn't bad but nothing special. Interior and exterior are worth a look, just that. It's very central

This church is a wonderful place to visit, It is awe inspiring inside,, with statues everywhere you look. We didnt go up to the top of the tower as it was the middle of the day and extremely hot. There were a few people sitting quietly but we walked around the perimeter and did not seem to disturb them. It was beautifully cool inside. well worth a visit

We were lucky enough to visit while there was a choir practice going on. It was very humbling to be able to listen to the beautiful singing, I presume they were practicing for the upcoming ‘Misteri d’Elx’ the cities major festival in August which has received UNESCO World Heritage status. The basilica itself is not the most spectacular I have been to but as with every religious place of worship it is full of unique treasures. The highlight was the climb to the top of the bell tower, costing €2. It is quite a climb of 170 steps and gets extremely narrow towards the top. There is however four points at which to rest and read up on the history of the basilica and the ‘ Misteri d’Elx’. Your reward for persevering with the ascent is fantastic 360 degree views of the city particularly highlighting the vastness of the palm groves. A must visit.
