A must-see when visiting the Shaolin Temple - amazing pagodas celebrating the life of past Monks.
Oct 2019
This Buddhist pagoda "forest" or "Talin" is 300m from the site of the Shaolin Temple, birthplace of Kung Fu. It is actually a burial ground for past eminent Buddhist monks. Each pagoda is placed on top of the ashes of one monk. The latest pagoda was built for a Tibetan monk. There are so many scattered close together that they have become a 'forest' and are one of the cultural relics of the many dynasties of Chinese history.

The monks that live here and maintain the forest are vegans. Their small farmland for self-sustaining vegetables is right next to the pathway from the forest to the Shaolin Temple. They have even cultivated some small trees and shrubs into shapes which apparently are letters of the alphabet!

A peaceful day

While at the Temple. It was an easy stroll through the edge of the Pagoda Forest. It’s protected and walking through forbidden. Make sure you have a guide to tell the stories of each significant pagoda

Very interesting piece of history
Sep 2019
The Pagoda Forest of Shaolin Temple is perhaps the most interesting part of the whole complex. As the head of the order dies then he is buried in the forest and a pagoda is erected in memory of him. Each pagoda is designed to say something about the person it is commemorating. So the most recent on has modern symbols on it (like laptop and car). It is very interesting as you can see many of the pagodas quite clearly from behind the fence. One of the highlights of visiting the Shaolin Temple complex

Beautiful acknowledgement to those who have gone before us.

I did not know that Pagoda is a tomb made for those who are not only famous in their live times but also have created something noble that made people want to devote and remember them even if they are no longer alive.

interesting

There were many different pagosas from different times in this forest. You can not get close to the pagodas, but near enough to get a good impression.

Pleasantly located at the end of a tree lined stroll. Our guide explained the relevance and history as part our visit to the Shaolin temple complex. Had a great day there.

My guide did not explain much about this place but advised against taking pictures with the cemetery. She did point out that one of the pagoda has reliefs of laptop, car and aeroplane. This place did not seem too interesting to me.

Interesting Burial Site
Apr 2019
The Pagoda Forest structures, both ancient and modern, are very interesting.
The bas relief carvings on the most recent pagoda have depictions of modern technology including a laptop computer.

Honoring hundreds of years of monks from Shaolin was an unexpected treat.
Oct 2018 • Solo
The pagoda forest was across from Kung Fu practice fields where hundreds of students were practicing. Shaolin is great history lesson on many levels.Much to see in one area.
