A little gem

If you are visiting the Shaolin Temple, you should include a visit to the Songyang Academy, also located in Dengfeng city. Perhaps not as popular and therefore not crowded, this was a tranquil spot to chill out. The buildings are well maintained and there are two astoundingly wonderful 4,500 year old trees. Tales of erudite scholars expounding Confucius philosophy infused the air as we absorbed the placid charm of this academy. I thorough enjoyed the visit of this little gem.

One of the oldest academies during the Song Dynasty in China

I visited this academy as I have half a day to spare. I took bus 2, 1rmb, and alight at final stop. Note for bus ride, ensure you have small notes with you, as buses do not provide change.

This place is smaller compared to Zhongyue Temple. There are some halls, temples, buildings, gate as well as many old cypress trees. Towards the end of complex is a library, with many ancient collections of Confucius teachings and other manuscripts.

Entrance ticket is 30rmb. I spent 45mins to cover the entire place Recommended if you have time to spare.

one of the top four imperial scholarly examination colleges, it is very well preserved. The garden areas have an air of tranquility and scholarly fragrance to it!

Not worth it!

This site should have been free. I paid 35 RMB to check this out and there really was nothing to see.The greatest part was a really old tree. Other than that, not worth the time or money.

If you love Chinese classical literature, must see..

This is where Duke Zhou, Confucius's teacher taught, as well as, many other Chinese classical literature were written. For me, it was interesting to be standing in the same room and wandering on the grounds where the great minds were taught. However, the classical literatures have no meaning to me. Our guide, Charlie from China Odyssey tours, was extremely enthusiastic in sharing the history (he was a history teacher) but it went over my head. My parents, on the other hand, who were educated in Asia, knew what books Charlie was talking about and found the place interesting. If you've studied the classics, this may be a place of interest but for someone like me, with no education in the Chinese classical lit, I would have skipped this place.
