We rented a villa in Citta della Pieve this September and from there we made day trips to many hill towns in Southern Tuscany and Umbria. Those of us who are Catholics attended Sunday mass at the Cathedral Santi Gervasio e Protasio. The service was lovely and happily we were treated as participants and not observers. This is not a particularly handsome or impressive church from the outside but, it is quite beautiful inside and like many Italian churches, it is home to several important works of art. These by Vannucci, known as Il Pereguino, who came from this small Umbrian city and who also has frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.
The priest who served mass the first Sunday we were there, Padre Igor, came back afterwards to talk to us. No one among our group was fluent in Italian but the Padre had studied and lived in the U.S. and was kind enough to show us the Vannuccis , pointing out a small self portrait of the artist, and then engage us in a lively conversation about America and its politics.
If you are going to be near Citta della Pieve, this ancient red brick town and it's 13th century church are worth a visit.

We were awed by the two Perugino paintings in this church. The colours are so clear and it is lovely to se them in the church.

It is easy to dismiss this church as 'one of those' but to do so would be a mistake. The interior is a mix of old and new, like the white vaults and the colourful marbled columns of the many side altars, which are all unique and interesting. The 'ambo', with its painting of San Gervasio is rather unusual.

Was recommended to visit a restaurant there by our lovely concierge. Entered the city in the evening and wandered the streets, talked to the old ladies that were strolling there and ended with an excellent dinner at a typical small restaurant with large food selection and reasonable prices. Loved it.

This church would be easily skipped if you only looked at the outside. Its not terrible impressive at all from the street. But to do so would be a mistake. We were in the area at Easter time and there is much gong on in Citta della Pieve at this time. We wandered all around and came upon this church and went in. It is very special inside. Frescos, paintings, sculptures. Small and very well loved pews and kneeler. Very spiritual and moving experience. We went back later for a traditional Italian mass. It is a special place.
