If you do nothjng else snd you have a csr....do this half day drive. There are fabulous lake views and Glenorchy is pleasant although nothing special.
about 50 minutes drive from Queenstown are some of the most spectacularly beautiful gardens I have ever seen.its about $15 for entry. The ownner has created these over sbout 27 years. His sculptures are everywhere and are brilliant..look for signs on the right side of the road as you head north.
Enjoy your trip.

Perhaps the most epic drive I've ever been on. I would say this drive trumps that of the great ocean road in South Vic, Australia.
Every single point was an opportunity to stop, get out of the car, big deep breath as your marvel at the beauty of nature and take pictures ! Get in car, drive, repeat x 100 !
The road does offer a good driving experience as its a bit nippy in a few places and the highs and lows offer the opportunity to enjoy the hum of your engine. The entire time the lake is on your side, and the mountains on the other side (and sometimes right up the front) offer a beautiful reminder of when nature shows its full face. Not a lot of amenities on the way, we didnt stop at all but the drive wasnt too long anyway. Lots of great places to stop and enjoy the water that flows into the lakes near Isengard lookout, etc.

A little gem and surprise beyond flashy, busy and too touristy Queenstown. So spoil yourself through 44 kms winding road, rocking hills, scenic landscape and pristine Lake Wakatipu in one side and magnificent rocky hill at the other side, with the end destination Glenorchy, a small quiet and tranquil town at the north end of the lake with picturesque horizon and landscape. There is one dedicated parking bay at the midpoint for the visitors to stop safely and take nice beautiful pictures of the lake and snowy capped mountains at the background. If you want more remote area, continue driving to Kinloch, another 26 km after Glenorchy with the last 9 km of gravel road.

The road that leads to this very beautiful and small town of Glenorchy from Queens town is extremely picturesque. This road runs along lake Wakatipu. There are many places where one can park the car and click pictures. The color of water in the lake keeps changing depending on the time of the day and whether it is sunny or cloudy. The road beyond Glenorchy to Paradise is also scenic. If one is in south NewZealand this trip by road from Queens town to Glenorchy is a must.

Allow three hours to make the drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy and back. This allows some time to get out and sample some of the tracks and have lunch in Glenorchy. The views are spectacular! Just when you think it can't get any better, you turn a corner and are greeted with another fabulous view. If you want to do more than sample the tracks, leave more time. We enjoyed tramping on the Bob's Cove track and having lunch at the Glenorchy Cafe.

The 40 something kilometres of the trip down the right hand side of the lake is one of nature’s best. The views of the lake and surrounding snow capped hills and mountains are beautiful. It’s hard to believe people farm this rugged beautiful countryside. Arriving at Glenorchy don’t forget to visit the historic 1885 hotel.

We did this 45 minute drive from Queenstown in order to do a jet boat ride on the Dart River. While parts of this up-and-down road are through wooded forest, the greater part is along Lake Wakatipu. There are a number of places where you can pull over to get amazing photographs of the lake and mountains in the background. And what's not to like about Glenorchy. A town of about 600 people but welcoming to tourists who take the trouble to drive out there.

Great trip as the scenery simply unfolds as you go especially the views of Mt Aspiring. Following the lake all the way enables a feeling of the size & real beauty of Lake Wakitipu.
The jet boats going out to the Dart River experience looked loads of fun as this is really a most stunning part of NZ.
Drive carefully as there are lots of tourists & others taking in this highlight!

This afternoon trip took in a number of scenic photo stops on the way to the iconic Glenorchy Shed! It rained for a fair portion of the trip but that didn’t detract too much from the trip although the road to Paradise was unfortunately closed due to the road being flooded. Our tour guide was very informative and took us to a number to scenic spots not on the regular route to make up for not being able to get to Paradise. I would recommend this trip - especially as a solo traveller.

This nearly 50 kilometres long road runs along lake Wakatipu and offers one the most gorgeous views on planet earth. And driving on this road is a dream come true for wanderlusts, especially in winters when you see the snow covered mountains across the lake. The beauty of that view can only be explained by a poet.

Is easy to drive from queenstown to Glenorchy?
I'm driving alone with toyota hatch
Written January 8, 2023
Yes, it's a very beautiful drive along a winding paved road. The scenery was among the nicest I saw in New Zealand.

How is this road for someone who is afraid of heights?
My wife can handle most mountain roads if they are wide enough, with a shoulder and a guardrail, but some main roads in the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevadas, and the Amalfi Coast were too scary for her. There's also one spot on California's Pacific Coast Highway north of Jenner that's too much, but Big Sur is fine, and Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is fine.

I am afraid of heights as well but this is not an issue at all.

Can I drive after 5pm for this road trip? Thanks
Written December 22, 2019
Yes you can, especially in summer, but the best light for photography is late morning. For most tourists this trip is about the journey rather than the destination

I will not drive on Paradise road due to the car rental insurance. Will I miss out some of the beautiful view ? Should I join the day tour?
Thanks
Written November 29, 2019
Yes, a day tour is highly recommended. Sit on the lakeside of the bus and the views will be breath-taking.

I plan to visit Queenstown, lake Wanaka, arrow town Milford sound and Lake Tekapo during May 18 and May 25. I wonder whether this time is suitable for the trip and will there still be some beautiful autumn foliage left to be seen then. If not, is these places worth visiting during this time? Thank you
