Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors.

The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches.

The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

This chateau hides renaissance behind its medieval walls. Lots of anger and envy and lots of love and passion is still vibrating in the air. Great furniture like a Napoleon III "indiscret", a type of circular upholstered couch that can seat 3 people or a 2 seat "confident" sofa. Some of the modern artists such as Couturier and Kounelis blend... More

really beautiful castle - well worth seeing if in the area. There was lots of works of 'art?' being shown all around it which I didn't quite understand (but then I don't really get 'art' and definitely not the modern / odd kind). It was more aimed to towards adults - it didn't really have anything there to interest the... More

I enjoyed the tour through the Chateau and seeing some of the changes that had been made to modernize it when people actually lived in it. The staples are fabulous! The Festival of the Gardens was a disappointment for us. The garden displays all seemed to be making a political point and I was expecting to see ideas for lovely... More

Enchanting Chateau - history well explained, staff helpful. A great day out. Kitchens were a welcome break from the heat!

I had a 2 days pass to visit the Domain of chaumont sur Loire. I came here mainly for the garden festival. I did visit the Chateau and it is well worth visiting although upstairs there is an contemporary art festival showing wallpaper and prints. Ok if you are into contemporary art. the ground floor of the Chateau was beautiful... More

Having been blown away on a previous visit to the festival we were so disappointed withe thie year's exhibits. Political environmental statements . A dystopian future. Very little joy ,beauty or serenity. Loved the relaxation garden and the perfumer's garden though!

The location of this chateaux is lovely on the Loire valley. The chateaux is relatively small but interesting. Not so keen on the contemporary art installations throughout the building. I like contemporary art but the art was not interesting and unrelated to the property or site. The gardens and the garden festival are plentiful. Well worth a look for locals.... More

This small chateau is well worth a visit. The gardens are lovely with some lovely man made artistic features in them. The chateau is interesting and there was some lovely art work on display.
