Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors.

The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches.

The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

I had a 2 days pass to visit the Domain of chaumont sur Loire. I came here mainly for the garden festival. I did visit the Chateau and it is well worth visiting although upstairs there is an contemporary art festival showing wallpaper and prints. Ok if you are into contemporary art. the ground floor of the Chateau was beautiful... More

Having been blown away on a previous visit to the festival we were so disappointed withe thie year's exhibits. Political environmental statements . A dystopian future. Very little joy ,beauty or serenity. Loved the relaxation garden and the perfumer's garden though!

The location of this chateaux is lovely on the Loire valley. The chateaux is relatively small but interesting. Not so keen on the contemporary art installations throughout the building. I like contemporary art but the art was not interesting and unrelated to the property or site. The gardens and the garden festival are plentiful. Well worth a look for locals.... More

This small chateau is well worth a visit. The gardens are lovely with some lovely man made artistic features in them. The chateau is interesting and there was some lovely art work on display.

We went to this beautiful castle - expecting more and coming away disappointed. We decided to eat at the 'mediterranian' style buffet and it was frankly awful. Poor reception by the staff, a few plates of under-seasoned pasta and some ice cream for 30euros.... so my advice is not to eat there....and if you do then try a sandwich one... More

We have visited many of the Chateaux of the Loire, and after reading about the gardens decided to visit Chaumont. The gardens were beautiful, and in delightful 'room' settings. At their best because it is August, the sun was shining, and everything was in full bloom. The Chateau itself was fine, some beautiful rooms, and some work in progress rooms.... More

We went after reading about the international garden fest, we were expecting beautiful gardens and instead found some not so good gardens in a bit of disrepair. The castle is beautiful from the outside but the visit inside wasn't very good. Tickets were the most expensive we paid for a castle in the Loire at 18 euros pp. I recommend... More

I loved this Chateau...It's perched right above the Loire in a tiny town. The building itself has some fine rooms, and some others (changed into art galleries) that were obviously servant's quarters. But the gardens and the art exhibits were wonderful. There are several restaurants and cafes. The vibe is so relaxed - this is great place to spend an... More

Visited the chateaux gardens for the international garden festival. We were very impressed by the chateaux gardens with flower borders planted in shades of pink, blue and mauves. They were beautiful. The garden festival takes place each year & this years title was Gardens from the coming century. A lot of gardens focused on global warming & adapting to our... More
