Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors.

The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches.

The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

I loved this Chateau...It's perched right above the Loire in a tiny town. The building itself has some fine rooms, and some others (changed into art galleries) that were obviously servant's quarters. But the gardens and the art exhibits were wonderful. There are several restaurants and cafes. The vibe is so relaxed - this is great place to spend an... More

Visited the chateaux gardens for the international garden festival. We were very impressed by the chateaux gardens with flower borders planted in shades of pink, blue and mauves. They were beautiful. The garden festival takes place each year & this years title was Gardens from the coming century. A lot of gardens focused on global warming & adapting to our... More

Art and nature go together well. The castle is very beautiful but what you must see is the gardens. This is unique, art pieces, gardens turned into art pieces. A lot to discover you can easily make a weekend of it Great !!!

A week cycling in the Loire can lead to a little bit of Chateau 'fatigue' - castle after castle, day after day, things can get a little bit 'samey'! Chaumont, however, was a total breath of fresh air. Instead of marvelling at a beautiful exterior, and reading reams of text about the history of this particular pile (all of which... More

It's amazing to think that the queen relegated her husband's mistress to this property. It's beautiful and charming. With a great location, towering above the river.

....The Chateau was super nice too. Beautiful Chateau overlooking the Loire river. The castle itself was imbued with such great history. Suggestion: as a companion to a Loire Valley trip, the book The Rival Queens about Catherine de Medici and Queen Margot is a fascinating read and put the Loire valley into a really interesting historical context. And beyond that... More

Wonderful displays, educational audioguide with additional information for those who want it, and extensive grounds. The gardens are lovely and certainly worth a day on their own. In addition to the historical interest, the region (which as taken over administration of the chateau since I last visited) has turned the space into a center for modern art, too. Once could... We came here early in the morning when the castle was still closed, so we could just take an outside look. It is very nice, but one day before we saw Chambord and Cheverny, so Chaumont is maybe less impressive than other two.

The castle is beautiful and if you go during summer you'll be able to see the garden festival which is truly a marvel. Plus you've got modern art every where on the domain and that make the place absolutely fantastic. We had such a lovely day!

This castle is lovely and gives a good idea of a complete working castle, with all the outbuildings. It changed hands a lot but it only adds to the story for this site. Really good audio guide with testimonials that bring it to life.
